The White House said no bargaining for a special contract after a cooling-off period. Rail unions plan to stay on the job while negotiators face a long stalemate. Government operations will remain under nominal control with profits to carriers during the period.

She told a peace committee she wishes to marry him, despite her father assembling 100 armed men to rescue her. Prime Minister Venizelos sent extra troops to prevent civil war as disarmament began.
Patrolman Louis Mosher said a domestic argument spilled over into a fire department response when someone called Engine Company 18 and Truck 1. Firefighters cooled the dispute with hoses, and within a short time all residents returned to bed.

Ten nurses aboard a hospital ship sank after a collision and floated on a raft while awaiting rescue in dense fog. Lt Eleanor Harrington of Lowell Massachusetts and Lt Gail Matthews of Scranton Pennsylvania described the ordeal at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital. Captain Cecil Riggs coordinated the rescue by tying nurses together and guiding survivors as they were pulled from the water.
Washington reports a House Senate conference panel failed to agree on giving President Truman broad wage and price controls. In Chicago a man pretended a broken leg at a north side currency exchange doorway yesterday to lure cashiers. He cried I think I broke my leg and Miss Hazel Guthrie, 48, hid behind her bullet proof cage as he threatened her with a gun and forced the cash drawer open. The staged scene ended with the suspect fleeing as he sought to escape with money.
