In Cortland Courthouse Park the Moving Wall Vietnam monument read the names of 4100 New York state residents killed in Vietnam. A vigil Friday evening featured an eternal flame, candlelight, a death bell, and speakers recounting names from Rossario Russel Abbate to Ronald Walter Zydel.

Hastings woman dies after car-train crash at crossing
A Hastings resident died after a 6:35 p.m. collision at the Hogs Back Road crossing in Oswego County. Domnice Revette, 29, was flown to Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital and her passenger James Cuyler, 22, died at University Hospital. Contras agree to talks with Nicaragua for peace
Six Nicaraguan Contra leaders after a five hour meeting with Salvadoran President Duarte agreed to participate in simultaneous peace talks with the governments. Duarte proposed separate talks on September 15 to push cease fires by November 7 as part of a Central American peace plan. The United States backs the Contras and Salvadoran government in the conflict with Sandinistas and insurgents. The Contras refused to lay down arms before an irreversible democratic path. The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front also agreed to talks earlier, but did not respond to Duarte’s peace plan.
