West Genesee School District fires nine year basketball coach John Zagata prompting veteran football coach Pete Palumb to resign in protest. Zagata will remain in district as a business teacher after being told he would not be recommended for renewal for basketball.
Federal investigators said wing flaps were not deployed and a pre flight checklist may have been incomplete in Northwest Flight 256. The MD-80 crashed after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, killing up to 158 with one survivor hospitalized in serious condition. NTSB officials noted no horn sounded and no cockpit recorder evidence of flap or slat checks.
In Hungerford England a 27 year old gunman in combat clothes with an assault rifle killed 14 people including his mother before taking his own life. The carnage began in a forest outside town and ended seven hours later at an empty school. Police called him a gun loving loner and an oddball with no note or explanation.
Onondaga County officials learned costs to fit the downtown Galleries space for the central library have risen to 3 million dollars from an estimate of 1 million. Legislator Salanger urged an investigation while Mitchell warned against excessive spending. The county rents the space at 3.5 million annually for 20 years with an option to buy. Kinchen noted the bid process included 28 bidders and no library input on the original figure. Lawmakers pressed fundraising to raise up to 700 thousand and formed a subcommittee to oversee improvements.
Gary Stollman of Tallahassee seized a KNBC broadcast with a toy pistol forcing David Horowitz to read a rambling statement about CIA plots and space aliens. He was booked on false imprisonment and disturbing the peace and taken for mental evaluation after the nine minute on air incident. Police said anchors and staff were unharmed.
