Grunman frees four hostages during embassy siege
Gunman Martinez seized four consular employees and a fifth staffer briefly. police and a fifth aide tricked him into believing his family had boarded the plane. Martinez, about 30, remained armed but no shots were fired and no one was harmed. Hostages identified as Jose Garcia, 43, Rose Bustamante 52, and Vivian Rosenfeld. The incident ended with the belief of safe conduct for his family and no political motive detected.

Large earthquake shakes ocean floor near Kamchatka Peninsula
The U S Geological Survey reported a 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred north of Japan in the Sea of Okhotsk near Kamchatka. Seismologist George Carte said there is no tsunami danger and noted the event took place about 500 miles from the Aleutian tip, with the nearest American presence at Shemya Air Force Base. The quake happened after International Date Line time, with the Richter scale indicating a tenfold increase per point in magnitude.
