In Soweto, police opened fire on demonstrators for a third day as black workers seek freedom for student leaders jailed since June. Seven blacks killed in two days, clashes widen, mobs block roads, and reinforcements plus nationwide alert are declared.
Senate backs a 25 year tax credit for students starting at $100 next July 1 rising to $250 by 1980. If a student works and files, up to $250 may reduce taxes owed. otherwise parents or spouses who paid tuition may claim it. The plan excludes room and board and has no age limit. The Senate also rejected an amendment liberalizing capital gains tax breaks and approved estate tax reform affecting all but the top 2 percent of estates.
The National Weather Service at Hancock Field expects clearing and cooler temperatures in the low 50s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with a high near 70 and no rain expected.
Gov. Hugh Carey signed a compromise plan for a gradual state takeover of local court financing after Senate 31 13 and Assembly 101 30 votes. Rush hour traffic on rain slicked Route 81 halted between the city and Northern Lights traffic circle after three crashes involving eight vehicles.
