Brisk relief arrives as a drier air mass from the central Great Lakes moves in tonight easing humidity after a three day stretch. A passing low pressure brought rain and winds up to 25 mph, with cooler, fair conditions forecast later and northwest winds 5 to 15 mph.
A tornado touched down in Albany's northern suburbs, hitting Halfmoon and Clifton Park in Saratoga County at about 6 45 a m. The storm brought heavy downpours, downed tree limbs and power lines, and one overturned trailer. No injuries were reported.
Three Mediterranean fruit flies were discovered in the Tampa region marking Florida's first appearance of the fast-breeding pest since 1963. Officials could not confirm fertility or determine an origin from California. The report also notes lottery numbers from Albany and a ship reference.
The Reagan administration says striking air traffic controllers due to report after 11 a.m. EDT will be fired. Those with shifts before the deadline have 24 hours to report or lose their jobs. Drew Lewis said many day-shift workers were unsure when to report. Only a handful reported at major airports as the deadline loomed. Poli claimed union resolve remains strong despite the ultimatum.
Major East Coast airports saw many controllers absent as a strike spread. Officials reported 72 percent of scheduled flights operated with military and supervisory staff filling posts. Airports from Houston to Portland noted mixed operations and traveler caution persisted.
President Reagan told Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the White House that the United States remains committed to achieving a comprehensive Arab Israeli peace. Sadat called for the U S role as a full partner while both leaders agreed to resume talks, stressing the urgency of resolving the Middle East conflict.
Congress approved a sweeping tax cut package that would trim individual and business taxes by 749 billion till 1986 and begin Oct. 1. President Reagan expected to sign soon, with the plan indexing tax brackets to inflation starting in 1985 and delivering sizable relief to higher earners.
Some of 35 striking air traffic controllers faced Reagan's 1 a.m. deadline to return to work or be fired at Syracuse Hancock International. A union leader said one or two may have wavered, with a 10 a.m. strength determination to decide who returns. Airlines canceled and resumed flights amid ongoing strike activity.
