Regents push to raise graduation standards faces concerns
Syracuse City School District raised graduation units from 18 to 21 and added city wide competency tests for eighth grade math and science and the eleventh grade Regents English exam. Chittenango already requires two years of math and science for a local diploma. Jerome and Lang question foreign language mandates while Harootunian says focus should be on recruiting qualified teachers and leaders. Morganti notes support for tougher programs but ponders longer school years and impact on summer vacation.
