Cuomo cancels trip to monitor anti nuke protest

Governor Mario Cuomo canceled his plans to attend the National Governors Conference in Portland Maine to monitor an anti nuclear protest in Romulus Seneca County. Spokeswoman Betsy Weiss cited prudence and said no site travel planned. Lawrence Kurlander remained in Romulus as Cuomo's observer request.

Leaky air masks plague cleanup at state office building

Two workers from Oneida Lake area and others involved in the $13 million cleanup of the 18 story State Office Building say full face respirators failed to protect them from dioxin laden dust. Tom Ryan of Cleveland and Scott Casselman of Constantia describe headaches chest pains and blood in spit after breathing toxic compounds. They plan to sue New York state for up to 10 million alleging gross negligence and improper protection.

Dioxin Health Effects and Precautions

Dioxin affects liver kidneys enzyme production sex hormones immunity heart vessels nervous system muscles blood and skin. Major threats include immune suppression and birth defects. There is no single test for exposure. symptoms include headaches weight loss fatigue memory loss and skin eruptions. Precautions emphasize minimizing contact with soil washing hands and wearing washable protective clothing after exposure.
