Park landmark status framed as living history at Thousand Island Park
In Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island the national landmark designation is tied to continuity of mood and a swami’s stay in a cottage on the rocks. Swami Vivekananda visited in the 1890s, introducing eastern religion to Americans, and in 1947 a retreat and shrine were established there by his order, attracting Hindu visitors who pay respect.
