A 90 percent chance of rain tonight and tomorrow prompts umbrellas. NWS Hancock Airport notes April rainfall two inches below normal. The Bureau of International Expositions gave unanimous final approval to a 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, the city's first in a century. Mayor Ernest Morial praised the decision and said New Orleans is ideal as America's most international city.
Conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr was struck with a pie following a speech at the University of Arizona where he questioned the need for universal college degrees and stressed examining student loans and subsidies. Buckley unhurt. no arrests. Separately in Buffalo a 23 year old man was charged with second degree murder robbery and weapons possession after a bartender was stabbed at a university district tavern.
Award winning author William Saroyan, 72, suffered a stroke at his Fresno home and was reported in critical condition today at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The report comes as New York state lottery results listed last night’s drawn number as 593 amid other humorous tax commentary.
Area apple orchards suffered damage from subfreezing temperatures over the last two nights with estimates varying. In western New York cherry and peach crops are also under threat while Champlain valley orchards report damage. Beak and Skiff Apple Farms Inc. estimates 10 to 15 percent of its 700 acre crop may be lost, temperatures dipping to 23 24 degrees. Apple Acres owner Richard Beak notes notable valley damage and about five percent at his LaFayette orchard. Smudge pots and wind machines are used by some growers to moderate cold, though cost and effectiveness vary. President Reagan proceeds with selling advanced radar reconnaissance planes to Saudi Arabia but delays sending the package to Congress to blunt opposition and avoid a veto.
