Mississippi voters rejected changing the state flag with a Confederate emblem in the upper left, keeping the current flag by a wide margin. About 488,630 voters, or 65 percent, favored the present flag while 26,812, or 35 percent, supported a 20 star design replacement.
In DeSoto County an 86 percent white majority backed the old flag while Hinds County supported the newer design by nearly 2 to 1. Across Mississippi a racial split shaped the vote as the state of 28 million population is 61 percent white and 36 percent black.

The Federal Reserve reduced its target federal funds rate by 0.5 percentage points to 4.5 percent in an emergency move. The cut follows a sequence of adjustments this year as sluggish investment, weak consumer confidence, overseas turmoil, and stock-market volatility weighed on the economy. The central bank also lowered the discount rate to 4.0 percent.
