Woman dies after Pompey house fire with rescue hindered by accent

A 79 year old Pompey woman Pauline M Sutter died after a fire at 3488 Sweet Road. Fire officials noted communication difficulties due to her accent as sheriff deputies and responders tried to help. Fire and medical personnel believe smoke inhalation or a heart attack may have caused the death. Her son John 58 said he awoke to the blaze and tried to rescue her but could not get her out before firefighters arrived.

Federal aid boosts for Syracuse area colleges next year

The picture brightens as federal student aid rises at several area colleges. About 60 more students at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 27 at Onondaga Community College, and a dozen at Upstate Medical Center may benefit.
