Charles Walker a 30 year old Bing hamton resident has been accepted for a heart lung transplant at Stanford Medical Center in California. He will remain in California until a donor is found while his supporters in Central New York donate funds to cover living and travel costs. Walker has faced severe heart and lung defects since youth and hopes this operation will improve his condition. Mary D. Gohlke meanwhile is upgraded to satisfactory after receiving the heart and lungs of a 15 year old donor, becoming the world’s longest surviving heart lung transplant patient.
Bela Karoly, who coached Nadia Comaneci to six Olympic medals, and his wife Marta defected to the United States, citing Romanian state interference in her coaching. Choreographer Geza Porsar also defected with them, leaving families behind, and they asked for permission for their child to join them.
London’s Daily Express editorial urged Diana Spencer to accompany Prince Charles on a five week pre wedding tour abroad, including a brief New York visit in mid June. The heir to the throne is in New Zealand and plans a tour of Australia Venezuela and the United States.
