Brezhnev backs Polish party amid Warsaw Pact fears

House panel rejects Reagan budget in party clash

The House Budget Committee voted 17 to 13 to reject the president's overall budget, with all dissenting votes by Democrats. Republicans supported Reagan, while Democrat reps argued for a Democratic plan with a smaller deficit, more social program funding, and less defense, including a balanced 1983 fiscal year budget and a smaller tax cut.

FBI questions Reagan in hospital after shooting attempt

President Reagan, condition improving, was interviewed in his George Washington University hospital room by the FBI for the first time regarding last week's assassination attempt. FBI Director William Webster and agents arrived after 11:30 a.m. to confer with the president as doctors report near normal temperature and evolving X rays. aides had said release from the hospital this week was possible, but White House officials cautioned that timing has not been discussed.

McCarthy Discharged From Hospital After Reagan Attack

Secret Service Agent Timothy J. McCarthy, wounded eight days earlier in the failed assassination attempt on President Reagan, was discharged from George Washington University Hospital. His wife read a statement expressing gratitude and a wish to learn the bypasser who aided him. McCarthy said it is great to be alive and to be Irish and visited Reagan, who looked remarkably well.

Abbie Hoffman jailed for cocaine sale three year term

Abbie Hoffman Yippie leader with six years on the run was sentenced by state Supreme Court Justice Brenda Soloff to up to three years in prison with at least one year before parole. He pleaded guilty to third degree criminal sale of a dangerous narcotic for selling 3 pounds of cocaine in 1973. Hoffman surrendered April 21 amid supporters shouting “Free Abbie Hoffman.”
