Swarthmore College Dedicates Wharton Hall At Commencement

Swarthmore College held commencement exercises last Monday awarding eighty nine degrees with many graduates already in national service. Dr Jeremiah W Jenks of NYU gave the address on The Citizen and His Government as the ivy was planted and Wharton Hall dedicated by Mrs Joanna Wharton Lippincott.

Cake Sale at Club House June 16 by Junior Auxiliary

The Junior Auxiliary of the Woman's club will sell home baked dainties at the Club House on Saturday June 16 at 2 PM. Proceeds go to the Emergency Aid Committee aiding war relief efforts.

Missionary Society to Hold Final Meeting in Presbyterian Church

The Woman's Missionary Society will hold its season finale at the Presbyterian church on Friday afternoon, June 15. Mrs. Milton Hazard will lead the devotional, Mrs. John Ellery Tuttle will discuss "New Americans," and Miss Marion Marr, soon sailing to China, is expected to attend. The borough's young women are invited.

Community Garden Work Progress Amid Weather Pressures

Volunteers from school and college joined to seed four acres of Ogden tract on Saturday and mark tract two for planting. Mr Hinman and Miss Bitler led planting of Ogden tract two in field corn with five high school helpers. Sugar corn completed on tract one and the near school plot replanted. Religious bodies endorsed the effort and called for more volunteers though few men have joined the work.

Albert H. Tomlinson of Swarthmore College was elected president of the college students association, having served as junior class president last semester. The announcement highlights his leadership role and the honor within the student body.

Malcolm Strieby Returns as Electrical Engineer

Swarthmore resident Malcolm Strieby graduates with high honors from Bliss Electrical School in Washington DC and receives the faculty prize for lecture reports. He will begin work with Bell Telephone Company in Pittsburgh on the 15th, and friends wish him success in his chosen profession.

Swarthmore Preparatory School Holds Commencement

Eighteen graduates received diplomas at a Swarthmore Preparatory School commencement in the school gym. Rev John E Tut tle led devotionals while Earl B Staley provided piano selections. Honorees included Leslie J Arnold Robert M Zeitlin Carl H Marwig and Ambrose A Arnold with Dr George F Blessing of Swarthmore College speaking on future responsibilities. Prof A H Tomlinson presented diplomas.

Red Cross Notes Seeks 150 Garments Milestone

Clara Barton Auxiliary of the Red Cross reports 150 garments completed since May 3. Officials urge doubling the total in the next month and appeal to Swarthmore residents to volunteer on Thursdays at Whittier House or Fridays at the Woman's Club House, with sewing machines sent to the Club House.

Friends' Aid Society Summer Meetings for Orphans

The Friends' Aid Society will meet Wednesdays during the summer from 8 30 to 12 30. Garments are being made for Belgian and French orphans. All interested are invited to attend.

Mrs Carl A Doubet Dies at Chester Home

Mrs Carl A Doubet wife of the Chester jeweler died Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness. She leaves her husband and four young children. The funeral is set for this morning at St Michael's Church in Chester.
