North Carolina dams risk rise as climate fuels floods
An Associated Press review finds North Carolina hosts the nation’s second largest set of high hazard dams in poor or unsatisfactory condition. The report notes 168 such dams, behind only Georgia, with 1,680 nationwide in poor or unsatisfactory status. It cites extreme storms, failed dams, and limited public emergency plans as authorities boost dam safety while many dams remain privately owned and inadequately documented.

Offshoot Mormons in massacre leave Mexico for Arizona
An 18 vehicle caravan carrying about 100 members of an offshoot Mormon community fled Mexico after a Monday attack that killed nine women and children, allegedly by drug cartel hit men. The families paused at a Douglas gas station before continuing toward Tucson and Phoenix, while others planned to depart La Mora and Colonia LeBaron in Sonora. Bryce Langford, whose mother died, said he was en route to a brother’s hospital in Tucson.
