Newport man found guilty of defrauding hurricane victims

A Newport man, Jeremy W. Thomas, 41, pleaded guilty to Hurricane Florence related felonies. He targeted Pine Knoll Shores and Beaufort residents from late 2018 to spring 2019, offered repairs, used a defunct local company name, and collected about $31,000.

Bernette Charged With Felony Hit and Run in Pedestrian Fatality

New Bern police charged driver John Alexander Bernett with felony hit and run after he struck Annastasia Stevenson 29 of New Bern crossing near Trent Boulevard and Stewart Avenue. Stevenson died after life flight to Vidant Medical Center. Bernett held on $50,000 secured bond after his first district court appearance following prior impairment charges.
