Bridge jumper dies after Neuse River plunge in New Bern
William Bailes 72 of Bridgeton died Sunday night after plunging from John Lawson Bridge into the Neuse River around 9 50 a m Saturday. Police say he stood on the outside rail and let go or fell in. A witness and rescuers praised officers for pulling him from the 10 to 12 foot water but he never regained consciousness. This marks the third bridge leap in New Bern since January 1994.

A string of deadly storms across Missouri Texas and Oklahoma left at least 22 dead and many injured. In Missouri a man died when a mobile home blew over during a thunderstorm near Springfield. In Dallas area floods dragged people into a manhole leaving multiple missing. Ardmore and Ardmore area saw significant destruction with 18 storm deaths in Texas and several structures damaged including a tire plant and a school roof. A tornado near Amarillo killed a man aged 38 and damaged eight mobile homes with several injuries. Residents described widespread destruction and dramatic weather warnings aided by forecasters.
