Head on Collision Sends Five to Area Hospitals Near Vanceboro
A head on collision on NC 43 north of Vanceboro left five injured. William Baker 21 Greensboro passed a slow vehicle and hit Shauna Weatherly Cooper 45 New Bern who, with daughter Karen 16 and Sharon Rhodes 48, was treated for injuries. Cooper in critical, Rhodes and Karen fair, Curtis Mitchell 18 Vanceboro released, George Reddock 26 NY with non life threatening injuries. Coward uninjured. Damages tallied at Honda 13,000 Chevrolet 1,000 Buick 5,000. Baker cited for improper passing left of center and safe movement violation with more charges possible.

Old Carteret jail escape leads to new facility tour
Carteret officials tour the county new jail opening later this year while a search continues for two escapees from the old jail. John Pinkham 30 of Beaufort and Albert Taylor 21 with no address fled about 6 30 a m after assaulting staff and another inmate. Taylor was found in Taylor's Creek, then driven to Morehead City and arrested. Pinkham captured late Monday in a channel area between Beaufort waterfront and Carrott Island. Both will be charged with escape and assault.
