DoD to spend nearly $2 million on PCB soil cleanup at Cherry Point

The Department of Defense plans a 2 million dollar cleanup to remove PCB contaminated soil at two Cherry Point sites. A public hearing and Q and A forum will be at 7 p.m. Aug 18 in Havelock City Hall to discuss EPA recommended corrective measures. The EPA's July Statement of Basis notes PCB presence since 1985 in soil and Slocum Creek sediments but no groundwater contamination.

Convict Bonney Captured in Norfolk. Stromer Still At Large

North Carolina escapee Bonney, 51, was quickly arrested by state police in a Norfolk neighborhood after agents canvassed the area door to door. Convicted rapist James Stromer, 48, still at large from a Raleigh Central Prison life sentence, was believed headed toward the Midwest. Police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame confirmed the capture and ongoing search.

Refugees in Zaire resist return to Rwanda amid cholera deaths

Nearly one million Hutu refugees in eastern Zaire refuse U N pleas to go back to Rwanda as camps near Goma report widespread disease and deaths. UNHCR officials meet with refugee elders to urge return, but progress is slow.
