Nine candidates contest Venice City Council seats in 1980

Venice voters face a four seat city council race with nine candidates including former councilman and mayoral hopefuls. Incumbent mayor Harry Case did not seek re election leaving a open three year post. Caffrey and Proctor run for the mayoral vacancy while three others seek the remaining two year term. Ed Taylor and Dr. Douglas Williamson vie for Caf frey’s seat amid local civic ties and community leadership roles.

Santa arrives in Venice crowds at Woolco Plaza

A plump Santa Claus descended from a red fire truck at Woolco Plaza on Friday morning. He was mobbed by shopping children released from school as sirens and lights drew attention while Mrs. Claus handed out candy aided by elves. Snow did not arrive.

Nokomis Woman First To Win Sun Dollars Crossword

Elsie Frederick of Lyons Bay Road Nokomis wins the Sun Coast Gondolier TV magazine Sun Dollars crossword jackpot after completing the puzzle first. The prize rises to 140 dollars with the purse resetting to 50 dollars and 10 added weekly if no winner. Frederick, who seldom solves crosswords, felt sure she had it and planned Christmas presents with the win. She returns to work, hoping the luck continues.
