City Councilman Frank Proctor is elected mayor of Venice one day before his 71st birthday, drawing a standing ovation. Eugene Atz and Charles Muller win three year council seats while a runoff is set for the two year seat between Ed Taylor and Eric Edgerton. Proctor totals 2107 mayoral votes to Caffrey 1712. Muller leads Stemm by 742 in the council totals.
Thomas Russell, 27, was named president of the South County Family YMCA in Venice succeeding a pivotal year for the fledgling center. Since joining in 1977 he has chaired fundraising and events and served as vice president. plans include a gym indoor club, soccer field, two baseball diamonds, and expanding the board from 18 to 30. A mortgage burning event is planned after debts are cleared.
