Sun Coast Gondolier (Newspaper) - March 13, 1980, Venice, FloridaSouth Venice voters defeat Road tax hike by de Cummings by a margin of 23 votes out of a total of 735, voters in the South Venice Road and Bridge special a tax District Defeated a proposal to add five cents to the 20-cents-per-front-foot assessment currently in effect for Road maintenance. At the same time three trustees of the special tax District were re elected to 2-year terms. They Are James r. Balmer 2531 Geneva Road Ray a g. Mell 188 tanager Road and a Aubrey Buck Slade 1015 Tampa Road. All were uncontested. The total vote was 356 for 379 against the additional assessment. Voters in precinct 34 narrowly approved the Issue. Those in precinct 58 Defeated it by a larger margin. According to Balmer now beginning his third term As chairman of the Road and Bridge District trustees there was no organized opposition. Balmer feels Many South Venice residents who live on Good roads tend to forget about others who Are not so fortunate and Are unconvinced that the least expensive Way to get adequate Road maintenance is through the Road and Bridge special tax District. Only about 20 out of 103 Miles in South Venice Are currently maintained by the county. The others do not meet county specifications and Are being maintained by the Road and Bridge special tax District from revenues generated by the 20 cents per front foot assessment. Failure to pass the additional five cent assessment Balmer claims will mean that Only about four Miles can be improved this year. Even that depends on availability of county Road equipment to help with applying foundation stones and Seal coating. A a we be been underfunded from the word a go a says Balmer. A Aback in the Early fifties when the lots were first Laid out you could buy two lots a enough to build a House on a for $400. Some people put a few Bucks Down and paid out the rest Over the years. It gave them a place in the Sun. Not everybody could afford to build a House right away. As a result we re scattered All Over Hellas half the Road and Bridge special tax District for South Venice was originally set up in 1957. The elected trustees Are responsible for supervising county roads in the District but not for controlling them. As Balmer says a they set management policy on How to do this that and the other efforts have been made to do away with the special tax District especially by people who have succeeded in getting the kind of roads and maintenance they want. Says Balmer a they done to believe this is the least expensive Way to get what we Sun coast gondolier Venice Florido thursday Morch 13. 1980?3 break in professional a former general motors executive reported to Sarasota county sheriffs deputies that his 1980 Buick Skylark was burglarized probably with the use of a very sophisticated break in device. Weekly Market report Courtesy of j. Som Pinkerton March 11, 1980 Quot its a full scale War out there there a a War going on in the Stock Market and the casualties Are increasing rapidly. It s a Battle Between record High interest rates and near record Low Price earnings multiples and Market action says that current interest rates have bombed out the relative attraction of most stocks. Interest rates and inflation remain the dominant factors affecting the Outlook for the Broad Market and they have already had a profound influence on the personality of the Stock Market. In our opinion interest rates have soared so High that they have killed off the secular Bull Market in a lot of stocks which had been in place since late 1974. The current level of interest rates has also created a Price earnings multiple Bear Market which won t go away until rates drop and stay Down due to a better consensus Quot feeling Quot about the inflation Outlook. The disarray in the Bond Market hos forced investors to redefine what is cheap in the Stock Market. What is cheap or attractive for Purchase must be compared to Bonds and most stocks fall Short. This Means that companies without some special attraction will continue to be ignored by new Money and under pressure from existing holders it also Means that both investors and traders must continue to stick with stocks which offer very attractive growth prospects. We still believe that selected Oil and Gas stocks Oil service technology and natural resource companies with assets going up in Price faster than inflation will remain the most attractive areas for investment. On an historic basis the Market is sharply oversold but our out of control inflation has created a new world which requires As yet unknown criteria for a Bounce. President Carter has promised Quot bold new Steps Quot to Battle inflation in a week or so and we could get a pipe dream rally prior to this address. We continue to see another attractive buying Opportunity out there but it still appears premature to leave Safe harbours. Would use rallies to sell uninteresting and Economy sensitive issues in aggressive accounts As we believe funds raised will be More profitably employed elsewhere later. Al Goldman a advertisement
