A pair accused of stealing a horse and buggy were apprehended in Terre Haute. Police report details indicate the suspects were taken into custody without further incident and await charges.
Harry Kidwell of Vincennes and Chester Lawson of Terre Haute were captured in Terre Haute on a charge of stealing a horse and buggy belonging to farmer William A Scott. The pair, 28 years old, were arrested by Sheriff Wible after a chase that started near Coffman park and ended with them turning over the stolen rig. Lawson had prior ties as a horse trainer with James Dudley.
Washington reports under the post office appropriation bill Postmaster General Hitchcock raises standard route rural carrier pay from 1000 to 1100 yearly affecting about 30000 carriers with shorter routes receiving similar hikes. The raise, effective Sept 30, adds about 4 million dollars annually and follows prior increases to offset parcels post burdens. He also orders 15 days paid leave after 12 months service, costing about 80000 annually for substitutes.
The county council in session Wednesday fixed the tax rate at 35.15 cents per hundred dollars. Appropriations were cut from $77,591.50 to $76,864 for the coming year. An allowance of $125 was approved for a copying machine and desk for the county clerk. All members attended except Harve Patton of Hymera.
County commissioners ordered bonds issued for the Jas W Adams levee in Haddon township totaling 6526 dollars and 10 cents and turned over to the county treasurer for sale. They also ordered bonds of 13239 dollars and 74 cents for the George W Unger levee in Haddon township. In Hamilton township Ed W Thompson et al filed for a highway location and the board of viewers found the route a public utility while Monon Coal Company filed a damages remonstrance. Pete Scott Charles Ramsen and Louis Story were appointed as viewers.
Rev and Mrs John Montgomery of Sullivan observed their golden wedding on Wednesday at home. Married in Lafayette in 1862, they moved to Sullivan in 1865 where Mr Montgomery became the first pastor of the Presbyterian church lasting until 1893. He retired in 1903 and they remained residents.
Miss Edna Calvert departed Friday for Fairmount Indiana to teach Latin in the high school for the coming year marking her fifth year at the post. She had just returned from a summer term at Columbia College in New York.
Vincennes report notes Frank Hooper of Bicknell was granted a change of venue for his murder trial. He killed Zac Dant and John Gaither in a Marcho's saloon during a drunken episode. Hooper chose Sullivan County Pike for the venue with the trial to proceed under a temporary insanity plea.
Mrs John Marring of Martinsville Illinois died Thursday near Denver Colorado where she had gone for the benefit of her health. She was 37 years old. The remains were sent to Martinsville for burial. Her husband is a brother of Mrs Charles Snavely of this city.
Graysville September 10 Garland Burton three years old son of Ly curgus Burton narrowly escaped serious injury after falling from the second floor of Graysville school into the basement. Parents lowered a rope to him and he climbed to safety unhurt aside from minor bruises.
The Merom chautauqua committee set dates August 21 to 31 for next year. Music will include Neapolitan Orchestra University Ladies Orchestra Hussars Rogers and Gilleys Apollo Concert Co. College Ladies Quartette. Lecturers include Governor Vardiman Lincoln Wort A E Wiggins Bishop Bell Herbert L Willitts Bob Leeds Gabriel McGuire Governor Hadley Thomas Brooks Fletcher Handley Hobson debate The Cartha Woodland Players. Grace Lamkin will amuse children. Woodland Players new department will present two Shakespeare plays in the woods using trees as stage.
County Auditor Win S. Bicknell named Zimri Payne, a Curry township farmer, as assessor to serve the late Dan Frakes’s unexpired term. Payne resigned from the county council and J. D. Martin, another Curry farmist, was chosen to replace him.
Richard Chranicki of Terre Haute arrived here Thursday morning for a visit of several days with his father, Mr. Chranicki, on South Main Street.
Thomas Shepherd has been indicted by the grand jury on a serious charge. The case moves to the court as prosecutors prepare formal hearings and potential trial dates.
Grand jury reports Thomas Shepherd of Dugger indicted for assault with intent to kill Code Burch and Henry Cushman for murder in the first degree in the Dugger shooting that killed Jas Pipes. Shepherd in jail on 5000 bond. Cushman detained since the day after the incident.
Stephen B. Fleming Democratic state senator spoke at the Indiana state house wearing a bull moose badge as Democrats watched. He defended the bull moose faction saying they are key allies and should be supported for about sixty days.
Postmaster General Hitchcock sent detailed Sunday mail handling instructions to 2500 city postmasters. Newspapers, news dealers and hotels can obtain Sunday mail treated as transit mail. The department allows emergency Sunday mail on application and ensures prompt delivery for special delivery mail.
The Forty Third Regiment Indiana Volunteers holds its 24th annual reunion at the Davis house in Brazil on Friday and Saturday September 27 and 28. J N Woods of Lewis serves as secretary of the regiment.
Cyrus E Davis of Bloomfield, a Democratic congressional hopeful, states he is part Bull Moose. He will back Wilson for president and favors Beveridge over Ralston for governor.
Garey Raley ten year old formerly of Sullivan, grandson of Mr and Mrs William Cope and nephew of Belle Hinkle, drowned in the Wabash at Terre Haute Thursday. Hart Parks also drowned. bodies recovered Friday.
Robert Vanhorn of Terre Haute formerly a Fairbanks township resident and his brother Elwood Vanhorn of Troy Ohio visited safe tires in this city and county last week.
W. E. Gardner of Shelburn reports his eight year old Jersey cow Mary Ann freshened on November 10, 1911 and last Sunday morning gave birth to twin calves. The cow, owner, and calves are doing nicely.
Rev. George W. Porter, pastor of the Baptist church in this city, tendered his resignation Sunday to be effective October 1.
Postmaster Holmes announces Sunday service for town residents with mail clerks handling deliveries and patrons using lockboxes will also receive mail on Sundays in this city.
Oscar E Bland of Linton was renominated by acclamation as the Republican candidate for Congress from Indiana's Second District at a Washington convention. Judge William R Gardiner was elected permanent chairman and the resolutions praised Taft and Durbin while urging mining safety laws and a rescue station for miners.
Mrs. Belle Hinkle, previously convicted of arson in the McCammon hotel fire, was recaptured after violating her parole. Officials allege she failed to stay with her half brother in Terre Haute and married without the board of pardons consent to a Clay County farmer who did not know her prison record.
Thomas Shepherd charged with assault and battery with intent to kill was released on five hundred dollar bond. The bond was furnished by Nancy and Rose Shepherd and others from Clay county Cass township Hymera and Ilinois following a gun battle at Dugger.
Week ending Sept 8 reports by Miss Carrie Yeager cooperative observer: daily highs and lows range from 89 to 95 and 66 to 73 with mostly party cloudy to clear conditions. Rainfall recorded 0.32 inches on the 3rd, a trace on the 4th, and 0.26 inches on the 6th.
Mugene Crawley of Tulsea Oklahoma visited friends here Sunday.
John Scott a 50 year old Scotch coal miner employed in Shelburn was run over and killed by a northbound C and E I railroad passenger train near the depot. His mangled body was found by a freight crew about three o clock Sunday morning. He was unmarried with no relatives in the country and had recently worked at Shelburn mines.

Prizes range from 50 cents to $10 with judging at the Band Stand and a square east side venue.
Well known Civil War veteran Jerry Lockwood died yesterday at the National Soldiers Home in Danville Illinois. A Sullivan resident for many years he was 78 and served as a lieutenant in Company K 9th Iowa Cavalry. Remains to be buried at the soldiers burial ground in Danville.
