James E. Watson former house whip and noted orator will address the campaign issues at Court House Park Tuesday afternoon. He will present the Republican view focusing on state issues in his remarks.
William Alexander Massey former Sullivan lawyer and editor of the Union and recent Nevada interim senator was named the Republican candidate for the Senate in Nevada primaries. He faced no opposition for the nomination.
Nettie Pearl Ellis and Bertha Elizabeth Ellis were adopted by James William and Elizabeth Alta Timmons and George W. and Nellie Fannie Collett of Guilmou r in circuit court Wednesday. The children had lived with the two families since their mother’s death, and the father consented in court.
A circuit court jury last week found James Cheney of Hymera guilty of illegal liquor sale. He was fined fifty dollars and sentenced to thirty days in jail.
Prof. Ralph C. Sloane resigns after two years as supervisor of music in the city schools and accepts a similar post in Richmond Indiana.
Citizens Trust Co. sues Frank Abell Thomas Moore Jefferson Abell and Hix W. Davis on note. William Cooper petitions against estate of Thos P Cooper deceased with M Ella Cooper as administratrix. Zoe Kirkham sues Chester W Kirkham Nelle Kirkham and Richard Brewer for partition of real estate.
Will B. Stark of Davenport Iowa and Dr. Harry Stark of El Paso Texas are visiting their sisters Lou and Nettie Stark.
The Board of County Commissioners appointed inspectors for the General Election to be held on Tuesday November 5 1912. A long list follows naming inspectors by township and precinct including Jackson Township Walter N Asbury Lewis R F D No 2 Thomas Plew and others in Curry Fairbanks Turman Hamilton Sullivan Cass Farnsworth Jefferson Haddon Gill and Merom townships with designated precincts and names.
Saturday September 21 events include mules poultry fruits vegetables and fancy work with prize money for best pairs, ribbons, and displays. Baby show offers five dollars for the prettiest two year old and a greased pole contest with a cash prize, with organizers listed at South Side Square and names of local hosts.
The tile and brick plant of Riggs Clay Product Company opened Thursday to the public. Hundreds of farmers and others interested in drainage attended, hearing the project cost more than twenty five thousand dollars and that it is among the state’s most modern plants. Visitors were served refreshments.
Prof. Earl C. Starbuck named supervisor of music in city schools to replace Ralph C. Sloane who moves to Richmond. Starbuck previously led Marion Ohio schools music department for two years and will start soon. He is an Indianapolis Conservatory of Music student and will direct band, orchestra, vocal music, and plan a men’s chorus to grow the program.
Jesse Plunkett a Civil War veteran and respected La Motte Prairie resident died at his home Monday at 2 30 pm after a cancer battle. He was 75 years 7 months 26 days. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove church with Grand Army of the Republic members officiating and President Long of Merom delivering the sermon. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery. He married Mary Shores April 1 1863. she died May 1 1912. They had 11 children, eight living: Rhoda Reynolds Sherman Moses Joseph Edward Fred Rev Arthur Hartsville Ind. Walter. Plunkett enlisted in Co D 88 Ill Aug 20 1862 and mustered out June 21 1865 as Corporal.
Harry Kidwell Chester Lawson and Herbert Marratta were taken to the Southern Reformatory at Jeffersonville after larceny convictions. Kidwell and Lawson stole a horse and buggy from Wm A Scott, Marratta stole a watch and chain. Indeterminate terms of one to eight years set.
Deputy Sheriff Hd Kelley stopped a suspect named Wilter Liveley, 23, in route to the Southern reformatory after Liveley fatally shot Jesse Coleman, a white employee at the Southern shops in Princeton.
The Sullivan County Water Company will install a new water works system and likely locate the pumping plant between Riverton and Merom Station where the Illinois Central crosses the Riverton road. Water at this place is of fine quality and eight or ten wells will probably be sunk.
Four youths Roy Cotrell Fred Weaver Vance Huffman and Floyd Weaver all of Nymera were arrested after entering Charlies C Nicholson's house near Hymera while he worked nearby. A revolver and other minor items were stolen. Huffman and Floyd Weaver were released on promise of parental appearance before Judge Bridwell. the others remain jailed. Ages listed as 16.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Samuel B. Ralston spoke Friday at the courthouse park in Sullivan County. About 250 people attended, a turnout viewed as disappointing by Democratic managers as Ralston defended the current state administration and liquor laws.
Lillie Ethel Ward daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Ed Ward will wed Charles C Ridgeway a local farmer next Wednesday evening at 8 30 PM at the Ward home in this city.
City schools opened Monday with the high school total enrollment reaching 214 for opening day, the largest in district history.
Lote Patton son of Mrs. Sarah Patton of this city died on the 8th at Angola Texas from consumption. He had been in the show business and his relatives here had not heard from him for years. He was a brother of Etta Lola and Tarry Patton of this city.
John Griffiths a well known citizen of Dreger and native of Wales was granted final papers of naturalization on Monday marking his completion of the naturalization process and his official status as a citizen.
The second district Medical Association holds its seventh annual meeting here tomorrow. President W. N. Thompson and officers Rh. Crowder and F. Briggs will lead activities. Registration at 11:59 morning in the city council chamber, luncheon at the Christian church, afternoon scientific problem at the city fair, and events including a ladies reception and a smasher at the Elks home after 7 p.m.
Carlisle public schools opened this morning after a diphtheria related delay. Attendance set a record as the outbreak shows improvement with only one new case reported in the past week within an infected family. Authorities believe the danger of further spread is past.
Charles D. Hunt of Sullivan came to Carlisle on Thursday night to organize a Wilson Club but did not gather enough supporters and returned home without success.
A three year old child of Mr and Mrs Lewis Alsman died Wednesday morning from diphtheria, living a mile west of Pleasantville. This marks the second diphtheria death in the Carlisle vicinity within a week.
The public library will open Monday September 16 from 12 15 PM to 5 30 PM and from 6 30 PM to 9 00 PM.
The Supreme Court will hear the appeal of the Chicago Terre Haute South Eastern Railroad from a Sullivan Circuit Court ruling that awarded Champion S. Anderson statutory damages for noxious rubbish along railroad land. Hunt & Gambill represented Anderson. Lamb Beasley Douthitt Crawford defended.
Carlisle, Sept. 14. Mr and Mrs Alex Murduck living west of town were in a corn field on the Mary Alsop farm when a friendly scuffle with a paring knife left Mr Murduck with a deep cut through the muscle of his left arm. Dr Pirtle dressed the injury at the Murduck home.
Reiford Leon Preston, nine, student of Mrs Ralph Warren Cadwell, plans his second piano recital Friday September 20 at 8 p m in Cadwell's hall. The event is open to the public with a varied program including works by Dibowski Sweeley Fearis Goerdeler Friedman Behr Moszkowski and Walsh.
California Governor Hiram Johnson, a vice presidential candidate, will present remarks at the C. and R. I. depot tomorrow morning at 7 50 o'clock.

The twenty seventh annual reunion of the 59th Indiana Volunteer Infantry will be held in Jasonville on September 26 and 27.
Mrs A D Leach and Ed Lee assumed control of progressive affairs and named a full county ticket led by Judge Arthur D Cutler with Saml W Woodsmall as Pros-Att'y and C M Lowder as Representive. Other offices include Theodore Harper Treasurer Ralph Willis Surveyor Chas F Brewer Coroner and two Commissioners.
The fair featured a parade where the N I T Club won first prize for a humorous group dressed as funnies. Flemming and Willis took second with a suffragette display. Paul Brown won the boys race. Various prizes followed for livestock crops and home goods awarded to local residents and groups.
