An explosion in Jackson Hill coal mine number two killed James I Chappel and seriously injured James McGill. The blast occurred when Chappel sparked powder ignition while preparing to fire a shot. McGill remained gravely ill with internal burns. both men were unmarried. Local inspector and coroner cited carelessness as the cause.

Returned to Prison in Indiana After Parole Violation
John Irwin who shot Thomas Glenn of Shelburn and was out on parole was returned to the Jeffersonville re formatory by a special deputy sent by Warden Whittaker. A petition in Shelburn asks governor and warden not to reeaim Irwin, and it is likely he will remain jailed. Glenn continues to improve and can be about his home, with ultimate recovery assured.

Wife of Dr A M Murphy Turns 88 In Sullivan County
Reached 83rd Milestone. Last Monday was the 88rd birthday of Mrs. Eliza Murphy of this city, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the county. Mrs. Murphy who is well known throughout the county was born in Monroe county Oct. 12, 1820, and has resided in Sullivan county since 1841. Residing at Carlisle until 1861 when she moved to Sullivan where her husband the late Dr. A. M. Murphy engaged in the the practice of medicine. She is well preserved for one of her advanced years and she may live to celebrate many returns of her natal day.
