T. K. Sherman longtime owner of Sherman & Son dies at 74 after weeks of illness. A trusted banker and church elder, he served on the school board and guided local progress. Funeral held Friday at his Court and Wall residence with extensive church and business community attendance.
September mail handled on two Sullivan rural routes rises to 8147 pieces from August 7148. Route 1 led by Ralph A. Dodds processed 8267 total with 2767 delivered and collected, and Route 2 under A B Thurber posted 4880 total with 611 collected. James Draper travels to Texas to oversee American Box Ball Company interests.
William McCammon, a prominent Sullivan county businessman born March 1, 1844, died last Thursday at his daughter’s Rosemead Farm after years of rheumatic illness. He built the McCammon hotel in 1881 and earlier worked with J. B. Able and John W. Wolfe in clothing. Survived by daughter Cora Gilbert and a son Harry (deceased) and a child who died in infancy. wife Rosa Pierce McCammon died in 1899. Funeral at the McCammon hotel conducted by Rev. J. E. Fry, with interment in Highland Lawn cemetery, Terre Haute.
New readers joined the Union Saturday adding J. H. Riggs of Farmersburg Jas A Ransford of Fairbanks Artie Weaver of Sullivan Mary A Tilley of Lewis J W Jeter of Galton Ohio and N G Cunningham of Decatur Illinois to the subscription roster.
The October term of the Sullivan Circuit Court convenes next Monday with a heavy docket. 218 criminal cases are listed, including the State v Basil and Frank Smith for assault with intent to kill, and the State v James and Sarah Hobbs for obtaining money under false pretenses. Civil cases total 174, led by C. W. Welman v Sullivan Times foreclosure action, as the home missionary society of the M E church meets Mrs Marion Willis for refreshments afterward.
The town of Dugger rejected incorporation last Saturday by a majority of 16. Proponents argued rapid growth justified town status, while opponents blocked the measure, with growth and prosperity cited as reasons to try again in a future vote.
Nancy D Raines Bell born January 28 1886 in Sullivan County Indiana died September 30 1902 after ill health. She married John Bell who survives along with two of eight children four boys and four girls. six preceded her in death. She joined Palmer's Paike Christian church in 1857 and later attended the M E church while seeking health in Litteton Colorado. The bereaved husband and two remaining children are urged to keep faith for a reunion in heaven.
City Marshal James H. Willis returned from Denver and Westminster with Russell Boles, identified by Fribold as her assailant in the Friborn murder. Boles awaits trial in Denver jail, claiming innocence. Willis aided by Miss Fribold and newspaper staff.
Drillers for Fairbanks Coal Co. reached a five and a half foot coal vein at 250 feet depth on the E. E. Dix farm. It marks the first shaft sunk in Fairbanks township. Sullivan Mercantile Co. advertises a complete furniture line including bed room suites chiffoniers china closets sideboards rockers and dining chairs at 1221.
