Woodsmall secures a $3,500 bond as he awaits a hearing in the Supreme Court. The filing sets the stage for the high court review of the case, with the bond serving as security during procedural steps toward the appeal.
Samuel W. Woodsmall, Shelburn attorney twice convicted in a conspiracy case, again appeals to the supreme court. He furnished bond of 8500 and faces an indeterminate prison term plus a 25 fine. Special Judge Nesbit set the new trial filing date for Saturday. bond was posted by listed sureties. The court gave 90 days for appeal prep with a likely six month wait for a supreme court hearing.
Rev William Edward Gray of Aurora Indiana who recently accepted the pastorate of the First Presbyterian church in this city will deliver his first sermon next Sunday morning. He is a Kentucky native educated at South Kentucky College Hopkinsville Cumberland University Lebanon Tenn and spent two years in an eastern college. He earned a B D from Cumberland University in 1908 and has spent most of his ministry in this state.
Workmen digging a well on the J. O. McCrocklin property in Shelburn struck a nine inch coal vein at 29 feet. This shallow depth is unusual, as the nearest known surface vein previously was 72 feet. The discovery is regarded as a phenomenon in local coal formations.
William B Boruff announces a public sale on October 14 at his James Driver place three miles southwest of Dugger. The auction includes horses cattle hay oats straw and farming implements with advertisement to appear on page three.
Pioneer resident in Sullivan County born in 1820 in Ohio celebrated his 93rd birthday. He arrived in Sullivan in 1852, helped run Wall Reid Hinkle mill, later farmed east of Sullivan near the Glendora mine, and outlived his wife Martha Reid and son Stewart Herbert. He recalls early county life and surviving Civil War era hardships. His children include Mervin, Wilkey, Gertrude, Mrs. Leach, and Mrs. McClain.
Charles M. Ring, 56, a well known farmer seven miles northeast of town, died in an Indianapolis hospital Saturday from a brain tumor following a fall from a wagon a month earlier. He underwent surgery but did not recover. Survived by wife, adopted daughter Miss Ethel Ring, two sisters Mrs. Matilda Jordan and Miss Malissa Ring, and brothers Jack, Joe, and George Ring of Missouri. Funeral Monday at Long's Chapel conducted by Rev. Mr. Peck.
Wallace Pierce, an oil crew worker, was burned when a gas release at an oil well near Here caused a dangerous fire. The incident occurred in the evening and Pierce sustained burns while on the job.
Thousands attended the Fort Peck Indian reservation land drawing in Glasgow Mont. Sullivan county residents drawing claims included Benjamin Williams and Charles R Magill Hymera both of Shelburn and William J Butler of Shelburn. Miss Mabel Sims of Glasgow registered first and drew 774 with a 3000 dollar claim. James F Collins of St Paul drew the last number with a 12000 dollar claim.
In Sullivan County oil field activity continues with multiple wells. Lafe Dix farm No 4 yields an estimated 100-barrel producer. Salt water struck at 665 feet on Patton farm east of the city. Gilber t Irvin farm south of New Lebanon expected to come in this week. Hamilton Oil & Gas locates new well on Thomas Houpt farm. Ohio Oil on Beard farm labeled a duster. Stewart & Henderson drill Willis Drake farm. Batey Oil drills on Section 29 Fairbanks. Kennedy on J H Wade tract and Octo on Wash Osburn farm southwest of old well.
James Daugherty of Hot Springs South Dakota visits his sister Mrs Ed Paylor of this city for the first time since their separation of thirty two years.
Beatrice Leona Mason died at her home four miles southwest of town on Wednesday at age 25. The remains were taken Friday morning for burial.
Abe Frakes longtime county resident dies at his home north of the city after months of lung trouble and related diseases. Born 1848 near Fairbanks, he held public offices in Kansas and later returned to Sullivan County where he remained active in Democratic circles and travel. He never married and is survived by siblings. funeral held at his residence with John B. Wilson delivering a remarks and burial at Center Ridge cemetery.
The city plans nominating conventions for Democrats on Oct 14 and Republicans on Oct 15 as election day nears. Mayoral candidates are unsettled with Joe Schroeder and Noah M. Drennon expected for the Republicans, Ward Hawkins possibly favored by Democrats, and others like George Price Frank Wible and Robert Calvert discussed. A third ticket may form if main parties falter.
Illinois Central Train 302 bound for the city due at 6 45 p m was wrecked about eight o clock Wednesday night near Solsberry west of Bloomfield. The engine baggage and two cars left the rails at the Ellis fill. Fireman HR Hauser of Effingham was the only injured.
About ten opponents faced Francis in the hall as roughly five hundred people turned away from the event. The turnout limited the crowd and reflected mixed interest in the appearance.
Dr. David R. Francis former pastor of the Third Christian Church in Richmond described alleged persecution by enemies including church elders and the Ministerial Union. He criticized supporters and vowed to seek a larger meeting place after a large crowd gathered at Liberty Hall where fire rules limited seating.
