Corporal Fred M. Loudermilk reports from Camp Taylor where a 100 foot flagpole and large platform hosted 30,000 troops for the flag rais ing ceremony amid a 100 piece band. He notes football results, mess hall changes, visitors, and daily training milestones including infantry and arms drill, trench practice, and new schedules.
Hoatney Alumbaugh of 827 East Dade Street near the C I and I depot tried to shoot himself with a .22 rifle shortly after four Monday afternoon at his home. He had been charged with an attempt to kill his wife and said he intended to die rather than be arrested. He fired against his side, the bullet lodging near the shoulder blade as he fled the plan to pass through his body. Alumbaugh, married about two months, was alone when the incident occurred.
Miss Sarah Freeman of this city wed Homer Tate of this city at Jeffersonville on November 1. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Freeman, is a Carlisle schoolteacher and Sullivan high school graduate who studied at Indiana University. Tate, son of Mrs Nannie Tate, was a former Indiana University student and serves with the Sullivan county increment at Camp Zac Taylor.
A Christian church gathering organized a County Ministerial Association to unify religious work in the county. Meetings will occur biweekly with the next set for Monday December 3. Chairman Rev Horne and secretary treasurer Rev Niles Hymera led the effort with Rev Robert Griffin Farmersburg Rev Long Sullivan and Rev C B Hershey Merom on the program committee.
J B Mullane of Indianapolis was in town last week on business, meeting local contacts and discussing potential deals. He visited several offices and remained in the city for a few days before returning home.
Sullivan County raises funds for the army Y M C A war work targeting 8400 this week under C H Stratton. Volunteers John Harbaugh Homer Tate Eugene B Marlow and Captain Roy Cloud return from campaigns to bolster the drive with church meetings and school visits across the county.
Leonard Arbaugh a 17 year old U S Army private from near Farmersburg is jailed on a desertion charge after requesting a furlough when his father was dying in Syracuse New York. He returned home to Farmersburg after his father died and surrendered in Terre Haute to a recruiting sergeant. His mother reportedly is in a serious condition though the family has no illness history locally.
The Sullivan County Medical Society held its annual meeting as a banquet at the Hotel Davis on Wednesday evening. Physicians in attendance included R H Vancleave J T Oliphant Claude Asbury J B Maple James Miles M Dukes I J Gill C R Walters W N Thompson E M Corbin J R Crowder M Billman C F Briggs P A Barco L A Stewart George Billman E Lindley and Herbert Leach as they discussed Liberty Loan and war efforts.
Tim Newlin of Terre Haute, wanted on a charge of illegal sale of liquor on September 17 near Hutsonville, is jailed here awaiting trial. He was arrested at Terre Haute and returned Thursday by Deputy Sheriff Otha Brodie.
Dr William Henry Harrison Asbury 77 died Sunday in a Chicago hospital. He practiced medicine at Jasonville for thirty years and was related to the Asbury family of this county. Burial is planned in Clay City where he had lived for several years.
Mrs. Jack Bradley of Cleveland Ohio returned home Friday after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs P L Reid.
John Scott and his wife Mary Scott observed fifty years of marriage on a Saturday October 22. A large gathering of friends and relatives, about 890 attendees, joined a noon dinner in the farm home where the couple have lived nearly their entire married life. Family photos captured the event, showing three children James H Scott Alice Johnson and Charles M Scott.
Word from Camp Zachary Taylor indicates 11 Sullivan County recruits from the first contingent have been moved to Camp Shelby in Hat tiesburg Mississippi for further training. Names are not yet known as the group helps fill unoccupied quotas. About 100 more will depart from the 291st Ammunition Train this week or next for Little Rock Arkansas, with around 25 Sullivan County boys expected to join.
County Fuel Administrator Dr. George G. Billman appoints an advisory committee to assist his work. Members include John Barnet of Hymera, P. Wilkey of Turman township, Harry Alnumbaugh of Carlisle, Archie Forbes of Shelburn, Paul Poynter of Sullivan, Dr Deputy of Dugger, and C. H. Snavely. Assistant C. TM. A. of Sullivan.
The Sullivan Bush Works files articles of incorporation for a clothing company. Directors listed are Bayard T. Lang Nellie T. Lang and Alonzo F. Coware.
Thomas Morgan a longtime county native and East Chapel area farmer died Sunday night at his son John Morgan’s home near Hast Chapel after eight weeks of illness. His wife, 78, is seriously ill from a paralytic stroke. Survived by Joo Morgan, Mrs. 3. W. Wright, and Mrs. James Moore. Funeral held at East Chapel Methodist Church with burial in East Chapel cemetery.
An afternoon family quarrel at Jackson Hill No 2 led to Sylvester Cochran firing four shots at James McCammon, wounding him in the face left arm and abdomen. Cochran was arrested after reloading at Fred Medeke’s home and now faces likely assault with intent to murder charges.
Noble M. Cochran 80 a former county resident was found dead at his Aroma Park home. Civil War veteran and retired farmer, he died after returning from dinner with his daughter. Survived by two daughters and a sister. funeral held at Aroma Park Methodist Church.
Hud Akers 36 a miner and Nelle Thomas 24 of Shelburn obtained a marriage license.
