An incident report states a young girl died after starting a fire with matches while Opal Fields played nearby. The girl lit straw, the blaze caused fatal injuries. No further details on age or location are provided.
In Hymera Indiana on November 11 two daughters of Henry Fields started a straw fire in a shed. The younger Opal Fields aged 4 was burned to death before rescuers could reach her. Neighbors searched the burning shed but the child could not be saved. Mr Fields learned of the tragedy on his return from a hunting trip.
The lawsuit over coal ownership on the Price land near Linton, Indiana, between Ora Price and Samuel E. Zimmerman et al of Paris, Illinois, was settled Saturday before special judge Charles D. Hunt. Judge Hunt confirmed Price as owner of the coal, ordered Summit Coal Company to pay royalties, and issued a permanent injunction preventing defendants from asserting any coal interest.
Mrs. Stewart Alsman was severely injured Saturday morning when the horse she drove frightened by dogs bolted and overturned the carriage in front of Frank Abels residence. Her two children Lois 11 and Opal 7 climbed over the seat as the carriage toppled and Mrs Alsman struck her head, remaining unconscious. The carriage suffered major damage.
Miss Carrie Yeager the cooperative weather observer for this county reports the week ending Nov 1 with mostly part cloudy days. Highs ranged from 57 to 72 and lows from 33 to 61. There was a trace of rain on the 4th and 5th and .56 inches on the 6th.

George B. Ellis of Columbia Missouri traveled here because of the serious illness of his brother in law William Williamson. Ellis a former Sullivan citizen attended a local school when Capt Crawford and John T Hays led the schools. He served as secretary of the Missouri state board of agriculture and now publishes an agricultural paper.
The circuit court adjourned today and will reconvene Monday November 25. Judge Wm H Bridwell has left for a two week hunting and fishing trip on Black River in Missouri.
Turman township farmers institute meets next Tuesday in Graysville high school with speakers including Prof. J L Pleasant on The Ideal Rural High School and W B Anderson on Growing Clover. Sessions run 10 A M to 1 30 P M with music recitations and alfalfa discussions and Mr Watson as president and E C Eno as secretary.

Announcement from Washington states President Taft has named Dirrelle Chaney postmaster to fill the late Arthur A. Holmes’s unexpired term. Chaney is expected to assume duties this coming Saturday.
Bailey Hawkins, once of this city and nephew of Ward Hawkins, was elected a county representative after the recent election and now resides on a farm in Marion county.
Henry Smith resumed duties Friday as chief of police, succeeding John Knotts who had served during the election campaign. The move marks a formal return to leadership for the police department.
Mrs Mabel Richards has returned to her Cleveland home after visiting Mr and Mrs Chalmer Moore north of the city.
Mr and Mrs Ray Beauchamp of Indianapolis visited relatives here this week as they traveled to see family members and enjoy the local area.
United States farming records show a corn crop of 3,169,137,000 bushels the largest ever grown by any nation. The November report notes total farm crop values surpassing 5 billion dollars including hay, wheat, oats, potatoes, barley, flaxseed, rye and buckwheat.
The fifteenth annual Woman's Club banquet occurred Thursday at Will Hays and wife’s West Washington residence. Mrs. Jamison served as toast mistress while Ex Congressman John C. Chaney spoke on Mexico. Dr. L A Stewart and Dr. C F Briggs delivered talks, with performances by Miss Pearl McMorrow and Will Hays.
Mr and Mrs John Gambill have moved from their Gill township farm to reside here for the winter. Mr and Mrs Cruze Brown have moved to their farm.
The quail hunting season opened Monday drawing many local sportsmen into the fields. Welcome reports note a hard winter has left quail scarce across the county.
L C Bert McGathey a 45 year old hermit trapper and farmer was found murdered Monday morning in his frame shanty on the M E Prather farm eight miles southwest of Carlisle After shots Friday evening neighbors reported seeing fired shots and the body was found seated at a table blood on the floor and broken window glass Coroner Padgett and Sheriff Wible investigated indicating a carefully planned killing likely to steal money McGathey's body taken to Risings morgue with relatives notified.
Lee F Bays confined by rheumatism was moved to Martinsville for care Friday. He was escorted by his mother, his brother Fred Bays, and Dirrelle Chaney. his mother remains with him.
Captain John W. Canary of New Lebanon spent Monday in the city en route to Washington D C He will join the document room of the House of Representatives upon arrival in the capital.
Miners are moving from Linton to Dugger for steadier work and better living conditions. If ticket sales do not rise within days, the Vandalia line train from Linton to the Dugger mines will be discontinued on the 15th inst. railroad officials cited low revenue and a recent wreck as financial risks.
Democrats won 92 seats in the Indiana House while Republicans gained five and Progressives one. Five Republican lawmakers came from Knox Lake Benton Warren and Porter counties. Beveridge carried Elkhart LaGrange Lake Randolph and Wayne. Durbin Porter Steuben and Warren. Roosevelt five counties Taft two. the sole Bull Moose in the next legislature is Judkins, a Wayne county cabinet maker.
Val G. Schlichter formerly of Gill township has moved back to Sullivan county after two years living near Crystal City Texas.
John W. Walker 56 died in Indianapolis after a year of declining health. For 11 years he owned and managed the Indiana School Journal, linking him to Indiana education for 30 years as teacher, supervisor, editor, and publisher. He formerly headed Pax ton schools and served Vincennes as school book agent before moving to Indianapolis in 1901.

William Baxter a miner at the Reliance mine near Shelburn was instantly killed Friday by a slate fall shortly after noon. He was forty, recently moved from Kentucky, and his family lives there. The remains were returned to Kentucky for burial.
Bloomfield judge Charles E. Henderson retires as Greene circuit court judge after a six year term ending Friday. Theodore Slinkard of Bloomfield will succeed him. Henderson was elected in 1906 as a Republican defeating John A. Riddle. He served four years here and earned high esteem for his rulings. He plans to practice outside Greene county, possibly leaving the state.
Ed Carty and Fred Engle, Hughes garage employees, are wanted on grand larceny charges for stealing a four passenger touring car from Mrs. Hattie Harper. The car, a new Ford with a bent axle and minor damage, was found at Fourth and Eagle streets in Terre Haute. Engle resided there, and Carty has prior trouble including a suspended sentence for theft from Sullivan Transfer Company’s barn.
James Meekin of Shelburn is jailed in Sullivan on a charge of stabbing Roscoe Osborne in the neck at Shelburn Monday evening. Osborne, 25, required eight stitches. Meekin, 28 and married, fled taunts from a mob before his arrest.
Charles Bedwell reports 45 dollars donated to Roy Kaufmann, treasurer of the Democratic county committee. W. H. Bridwell says 1.62 dollars spent for postage and Tri Kappa program advertising. W. R. Nesbit, a Republican candidate for judge, states no subscriptions or promises were made.
Prairie lodge I O O F of this city will host the county gathering in the redecotated hall. Seven candidates will be initiated with degrees exemplified by Graysville 584 Dugger 616 Carlisle 50 and Sullivan 147. Meals will be served in the Carter block by the Rebekahs.

Ward Griffith, formerly a clerk in a Linton drug store, has returned and is clerking for Chas. Batey, the south side druggist.
