Herman H Van Vieck recounts the 25th annual Manns Grove Sunday School Association picnic held in 1917. He notes origins in 1883, early rallies across local groves, and lists officers and presidents over the years, highlighting Warren Watson as longstanding secretary and organizer.
A large crowd is expected for Armistice Day events as city businesses close all day and banks suspend business. Veterans parade and Dixie Highway tree planting are planned with speeches by William T. Douthitt. The day includes decorated streets and school programs with songs, recitations, essays, and class drills. A refreshment stand, funded by bidders, supports expenses.
The Jackson county court held a regular session approving tax refunds to Frank Knotts and the National Bank as receiver for Mutual Truck, and ordered highway petitions reviewed. Viewers appointed for several routes, ornamental light posts approved, Gill township drainage planned with tiling funded by the township, and contractor Loudermilk ordered to finish the P D Over gravel road per plans.
The County Farm Bureau held its annual meeting at the courthouse with modest attendance. Addison Drake of Fairbanks was reelected president. A V Munich of Haddon township as vice president. R L Ladd of Jackson township as treasurer. William Jamison of Hamilton township as secretary. Vice presidents named were Clyde Shields Turman township James R Riggs Sullivan and Walter Strawn Jackson township. Earl Crawford of the State Highway Commission spoke, joined by Dr G M Frier from Purdue. Sullivan county folks will attend the state meeting in Indianapolis next week.
The Fairbanks Victors, county basketball champions for two years running, begin the season Saturday night against the Cory Independents at Pounds Hall. The lineup includes Dick Pound Lucky Johnson Bill Drake Red Fuller Bill Fuson Buster DeBaun Popcorn Johnson Jo Eisner Bud Horner and Slim Lester as they seek a 15 and 0 record.
The Turman Township Sunday School Association sold its refreshment stand and seats to Tom Durham for forty five dollars. The old speakers stand was donated to Mann cemetery as a tool house. Officers named James J. Durham president E C Eno secretary and Frank Badger treasurer. Proceeds go to Turman township and Kingsley Chapel schools. Warren Watson a founder attended every annual meeting.
Multiple cases listed including quiet title actions Lydia E Price against Samuel Mason and Turman Riggs against Samuel Whitfield, possessory disputes with Edna McCullough, and divorces with alimony custody support. Replevin against George Gotha and injunction against Otto Sebring. Terre Haute Trust Co. involved in a note action.
Miners across the county resume operations Monday after a several day idle period caused by Judge A B Anderson's check off ruling from the Federal court in Indianapolis. District organization orders followed the Court of Appeals decision directing a return to work.
The Parent-Teachers Association was organized last Wednesday evening at the city high school building. Officers elected include President Mrs. J. R. Riggs Vice-president Miss Elizabeth Hull Secretary Mrs. Will Thompson Treasurer Mr. Merrill.
The Fairbanks B Y P U will hold a gathering Sunday evening November 13 at 7 30. A musical program will be presented and talks on Bible Examples of Personal Evangelism will be given.
Golen T. Cox 29 farmer near Graysville weds Katherine E. Huff 22 near Sullivan. Joshua E. Powell 58 carpenter Sullivan weds Nancy Miller 53 Evansville Ind. Charles E. Gibbs 29 miner Pleasantville weds Mabel Edwards 21 Carlisle.
The Merchants Ice and Fuel Company plans extensive improvements to its ice plant in the city. Capacity will rise from 35 to 50 tons, with a thorough modernization and electric driven machinery installed throughout. An addition is being added to the plant.
The city council awarded the contract for a uniform post lighting system on the public square and adjacent streets, with posts 75 to 100 feet apart on the square and 100 feet apart on West Washington. McKinley & Brodie will install the posts by Union Metal Co of Canton Ohio supplies cables and fixtures by General Electric. Installation costs are charged to property owners. county will install posts around the courthouse park.
Don Roberts, Democrat for mayor, loses to Ora D. Davis by 552 votes. Ira D. Andrews elected city clerk by 893, Robert R. Irwin wins city judge seat by 163. Joseph P. Duffy, Sullivan native, joins Terre Haute school board as Republicans capture most wards.
Republican Lew Shank won the Indianapolis mayoral election by a phenomenal 23 000 vote margin over Democrat Bernard M Ralston. It was the largest majority ever for any Indianapolis mayoral candidate.
John M. Grayson, Republican candidate for mayor, was elected along with a majority of the city council. Grayson becomes the second Republican mayor in Vincennes history, following James M. House who was elected twelve years ago. Co. L. V. Tucker was also elected city clerk.
John McCarty, former Washington mayor and Democratic candidate, defeats Joe Allen, the Republican nominee and current incumbent, by a 459 vote margin. The result shifts local leadership and reflects a tight partisan contest in the city.
Irvin Huffman a Socialist is elected mayor by 264 votes with the rest of the ticket scratched. A E B McCullough a Republican is clerk by 96 votes and L M Walters a Republican is treasurer by 37 votes. William Lee and George McIntyre both Socialists win wards one and two council seats, J C Moss secures councilman at large, Rose Frump a Democrat wins third ward council seat, and Oliver Keagy a Republican is councilman at large.
A large crowd attended the joint meeting of the Fairbanks and Turman township farm bureaus at Graysville school last night. Milton Drake delivered an excellent address on agricultural conditions and members of the Fairbanks bureau performed an amateur play The Old Maids' Social, followed by a musical program.
The Democratic slate swept city offices in a low turnout election. Walter Walters led mayoral voters 700 to 464 over Republican Maple with 380 for Farmer-Labor Beck. Council races in wards one through three favored Democrats, with Myles, Black, and Brown winning, while Myrtle Macey narrowly beat Pearl Burton for city clerk. The total mayoral vote was 1544 as officers prepare to take office January 1.
William A. Trigg won a seat on the Carlisle board of town trustees in the first district. Charles Sproatt was elected town clerk and treasurer without opposition.
The Democratic slate won all town offices in Farmersburg, defeating the Republican ticket by an average majority of about one hundred. Winners include Trustee 1st Ward Tilden Railsback, Trustee 2nd Ward Chauncey Thomas, Trustee 4th Ward Joe Branson, Clerk and Treasurer C H Smith.
The entire Republican town ticket won at Hymera yesterday defeating the Democratic ticket. Joe Gilman was elected trustee of the first ward by 117 and William Kensler trustee of the second ward by 103. M. H. Hamilton was re-elected town clerk and treasurer by 132.
The Citizens ticket won a closely fought election in Shelburn. Elected were R. H. Heath for 1st ward councilman William Schaffer for 2nd ward John W. Miller for 3rd ward Fred Greenwood for 4th ward J. E. Taylor elected clerk and treasurer.
The semi annual gathering of the Sullivan County Rural Carriers Association convened Saturday night at the Knights of Pythias hall. Members discussed schedules for the year with meetings set for the first Saturdays in May and November. An oyster supper followed the session.
