Sylvester Mahan, a Jackson township farmer near Lewis, received a 761.66 dollar check from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for saving neighbor boy John Bemis from a well filled with poisonous gas after Bemis fainted. The commission will send the remaining 238.34 dollars from the one thousand dollar reward soon, and Mahan also earned a bronze medal for his brave rescue.

Former Sullivan Man Injured in St Louis Auto Crash
L. B. Boston of Washington a former Sullivan businessman was hit by a large automobile Thursday evening in St. Louis while dodging two street cars. He suffered severe facial injuries with most teeth knocked out and a deep cut on the cheek but had no broken bones and returned home Friday. The car owner’s identity was not learned. Tilghman Boston of this city visited his brother in Washington Sunday.

Dismissal of Habeas Corpus Custody Case Monday

William H. Jones, Sullivan county's leading farmer and stock raiser, sent 300 head of beef cattle weighing an average 1550 pounds to Swift & Company of Chicago. The shipment, loaded at Merom Station, required 20 cars and is valued at over forty thousand dollars. Cattle were bought by Powell Brothers of Indianapolis. The Jones silo, 70 feet tall and 35 feet in diameter, is among the largest in the country. workmen cleared silage remaining in the silo prior to refilling.

Garripey Pleads Guilty in White Slavery Case
Frank Garripey, a married man with several children, returned from California to Indianapolis and pleaded guilty to a Mann Act charge of white slavery. U S Attorney Slack outlined that Garripey took 15 year old Lou Ransford from Sullivan county to Fullerton California to live as husband and wife. The Ransford girl and her nine month old baby were present in court. Judge Anderson will decide the case by June 21.

Unconfirmed reports say the Vandalia Coal Company will move offices to Sullivan to develop 2500 acres in Cass township with three new mines near Dugger Niggertown and southeast of Dugger. Plans include expanding holdings by taking over land from Consolidated Indiana Coal and Whitsett Coal, and Linking with Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern Traction to expand lines eastward. The project could employ hundreds and boost Sullivan's population.
