County Warns on Registration Receipts for Draft Draw

Perry Smith aged 72, Merom pioneer and Civil War veteran, died Friday night after a prolonged illness. Born in Ohio, he moved to the county as a boy, taught for years, then farmed. Sullivan Physicians Leave for Fort Harrison
Dr. Garland D. Scott and Dr. Paul Higbee of Sullivan enlist in the Medical Reserve Corps and will report for duty as officers. Fort Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis will host one of four camps to train 10,000 doctors for war service starting June 1. The effort includes Indiana Medical Society members and doctors from other Midwestern states, with 500 physicians currently in the army and 9,500 more to be trained. The Indiana National Guard medical personnel may be brought into Federal service for this training and later assist in camp sanitation and first aid instruction.

Henry A. Hazelrod unearthed a brass shield in his garden one mile east of Graysville on the old Dr. Weir farm. The coat of arms features 13 stars and the number 313, with two drilled holes likely for screws to attach to a tool or machine. The heavy brass piece measures 5 by 4 1 2 inches and likely stayed buried for many years.
