Death of Willis Benefield in Sullivan County
Willis Benefield, a wealthy and influential farmer in Sullivan county, died at his home on East Jackson street Wednesday night after several days of illness. He had shown slight improvement that day, but the disease proved fatal despite his forty years of asthma battles and hopes for a climate change to extend life.

Early Sullivan County Pioneer Benefield Passes Away
Mr Benefield born May 20 1822 in Lawrence County near Bedford. He served in the Mexican War under Capt Joseph Briggs and settled in Sullivan County after land troubles with the Canal Company. He married Elizabeth Maxwell in 1850 and had six children, with three surviving. Interment followed at Palmer's Prairie.

The Gill Township levee broke Friday at 4 PM, south of Riverton, widening from 20 feet to 140 feet. The 18000 acres protected may flood, with corn losses: Dr. Dennis 5000 bushels, Liver Chaney 2000, the Daughertys 1500. Wheat could survive if river subsides. repairs planned after height returns. The break coincidentally occurred six years after the 1898 failure.

High Water Havoc Hits Sullivan County after Heavy Rain
A weekend storm drenched Sullivan county with 5.4 inches of rain and caused widespread flooding. The Wabash River near Riverton rose beyond 1898 levels, flooding 5 to 10 miles of banks and washing out and repairing railroad and grade crossings. I C tracks near Riverton and Busseron faced closures with mail delivery disrupted.

Coal Miner Jas Toner Fatally Burned In Home Fire
Jas Toner aged thirty a coal miner was burned to death Saturday night about 10 30. He lived alone in a house of the Indiana Hocking Coal Company two miles southeast of Farmersburg. He returned home intoxicated and is believed to have attempted to light a gasoline stove which exploded. The mine night engineer first discovered the fire and found the small frame structure burned.
