Prof. W. C. McCollough, seven years superintendent, informs the school board he will not seek re election due to ill health. He is praised for efficient leadership and long service benefiting the city’s schools.
The New Lebanon rural route, 14 miles long, will start service on May 2 and serve 73 families. It travels south from New Lebanon to James Springer’s farm, then northwest to Rose Chapel, along sand ditch roads to the Jones place, east to Pearson and Thompson, to Rose Chapel again, then north to Dan Hancocks on the Webb gravel road back to New Lebanon.
With The Lodges Sullivan Chapter R. A. M. conferred the Royal Arch degree on Dr. E. D. Thixton O. D. Rohnson and Charles E. Draper last Thursday night. The chapter will confer the Royal Arch degree on three candidates at their regular meeting next Thursday night. W. G. Scott M. A. Haddon F. E Basler J. M. Lang John Ersinger W. T. Douthitt G. W. Buff J. T. Hays and C. D. Hunt attended a Terre Haute meeting of the Terre Haute Masonic council Tuesday evening.
Humera Indiana April 5 report of a small Black Spanish hen owned by Chas Cummins laying a remarkable egg. It measured nine inches around the long way and six inches around the short way, with equal ends. The shell was white on the outside while the inner egg possessed a light brown shell like a Plymouth Rock. It contained two full sized yolks and a second ordinary egg inside with a hard shell.
County Commissioners awarded contracts to Vincennes Bridge Company for 9540 to construct several Sullivan county bridges. Each span priced details include Wester Ford 100 per span Drake 100 per span Dodd 25 per span with legs Springer 50 per span Branson 60 per span Eaton 30 per span Rose Hill 50 per span with legs Carlisle Repair 100 Merom Repair 90.
Party leaders outline dates and venues for county and judicial convention delegate elections. Conventions begin April with multiple townships including Haddon Carlisle Jefferson Turman Pleasantville and others. final date May 7. All gatherings scheduled for 1 30 PM. Will H Hays chairs. The Haddon township board approved liquor licenses for Spencer McGrew Shel burn James Dudley Sullivan O J Dudley Sullivan Elmer E Dunbar and Carlisle. No remonstrance against Dunbar's application was filed by anti saloon groups. Dunbar's application appeared in the Farmersburg Bee which does not circulate in Haddon township.
Edgar Able versus Green Hill Coal and Mining Company settled and dismissed for personal injury. Isaac Bennett versus Andrew J Rich awarded 60 dollars for assault and battery. Frank Osburn versus Otho Springer settled on account and lien. State of Indiana ex rel Elijah E Russell versus Sullivan County Board of Commissioners dismissed at relator costs. John W Martin versus Rainbow Coal and Mining Company damages awarded 300 dollars. W W Howard administrator of Alexander Shake estate versus Sarah Shake petition to sell real estate dismissed. C. J. Sherman retires from active business selling his Sullivan store to Edward Carruthers T B Springer Jr and J Harve Crowder. Carruthers moves from Graysville with wife to Sullivan May 1. Springer bought C H Crowder Co shoe business and Crowder is son of William Crowder.
Route No 1 reports April 1 1903 to April 1 1904 by carrier Ralph A Dodds details delivered including letters postal cards papers circulars and packages with totals and stamp values. Route No 2 reports year ending March 31 1904 with delivered and collected totals mail items stamps and travel metrics for the route.
The Terre Haute Star reports Roxy Gastineau has filed for divorce from Robert L. Gastineau accusing him of cruelty and stealing her rings and other wearing apparel.

Riley Knotts a 55 year old prosperous Carlisle farmer committed suicide by hanging in his barn after concerns about a possible return to Evansville insane asylum. Coroner Maxwell conducted an inquest and Knotts who had been Worshipful Master of Carlisle lodge is survived by his wife and one half brother. He had a prior suicide attempt two years earlier and was once deemed insane and treated at Evansville asylum.
The Terre Haute Star reports social events in Sullivan including the Pricilla Embroidery Club gathering hosted by Mrs. Ed Davis and notes the E. M. Club euchre night with prizes won by Miss Nelle Hanchett and Lulu Knotts. Jeanette Cliver and Edgar Allan Turpin plan a wedding April 20 at the bride's father home. A Sullivan Easter dance at the Davis hotel featured Pandon Bros. Orchestra with many attendees.
Sullivan County Medical Society holds its regular quarterly meeting this afternoon at the Davis hotel. Dinner was served at noon. The afternoon session is in room 10. Dr Joseph Ayfus Eastman of Indianapolis will lecture on Fractures of the Skull and Dr C M Lowder of Dugger will lecture on Calles Fractures.
The body of an unknown man killed in Terre Haute last Wednesday by William Hawkins has been identified as Ogg Isbell by Truss Isbell and John Bedwell. Isbell, a married miner and United Mine Workers Local 1328 member, had history with Claude Land and died after Hawkins struck him with a bottle. Hawkins is jailed in Terre Haute charged with first degree murder.
In Indianapolis on April 3 a thief entered banker M. B. Wilson’s home during dinner and stole jewelry valued between 1000 and 1200 dollars from the two rooms of the Misses Wilson. A servant saw a Negro fleeing on the veranda and police, with several suspects, were notified. Wilson, once president of Sullivan’s Farmers State Bank, is well known in the county.
The Walters residence about five miles east of Sullivan on the Dugger road burned Tuesday afternoon. Discovered by James Willis and I H Kalley who saw the blaze. Kalley, Willis and another man saved most household goods. Loss about 1500 with insurance, which expired three hours before the fire and was void.
James C. McKee of Fairbanks township renewed his newspaper subscription and ordered bills for an April 27 sale he will host. After the sale he and his wife will move into the Woods property on South Main street they recently purchased. Last July McKee was run over by a wagon and his right arm was permanently injured.
