Chaney Proposes Radical Overhaul of Civil War Pensions
Indiana Representative John C. Chaney introduces a bill to end the present pension system on July 1 1908 and replace it with a service pension plan funded by savings in administrative costs. The bill would grant pensions for Civil War service while limiting disability awards and include a $12 monthly widow pension for marriages before July 1 1865. General W Dudley supports the measure, and Chaney seeks rapid Indiana support and federal aid for a Lawton monument.
