A local ceremony marks a cornerstone laying at Pleasantville with remarks by community leaders. The event highlights ongoing civic projects and honors notable residents.
Mary Catherine Allen Peck, daughter of Professor Allen, wife of M. Beck, and mother of Allen Peck, died aged twenty-one in Hillsboro. Born in Varlistle Indiana, she taught in public schools, married James M. Beck, and lived in Hillsboro before moving through Yates Center and Denver to Sterling. Survived by husband, father, siblings, and extended family. funeral at Hillsboro Church, interment Oak Grove Mausoleum.
The Hamilton township schools held commencement in the Gymnasium auditorium on North Court Street. Prof. T. G. Brown of Indianapolis urged students toward continued schooling and high school enrollment this fall, noting diplomas would authorize admission to any state high school. diplomas were presented by County Superintendent Richard Park to the eighth grade graduates: Burnice Arnett, Alpha Akers, Fairy Benson, Lilian Clark, Marie Evans, Walter Ford, John Frakes, Max Ferree, Irene Higenbothem, Lucile Hughes, Charities Johnson, Nettie Palmer, Ruth Pinkston, William Plunkett, Carl Rusher, Raymond Scott, Gladys Shipman, Mildred Smith, Carl Scott, Juanita Ward.
Merom merchants announce a large Fourth of July celebration featuring an a Itived concert, car races, balloon ascension, river slides, potato and wheelbarrow races, a ball game, and a nationally noted speaker. The Merom Leader expects a big crowd given the town’s history of hosting large gatherings.
The IC CG College departments at Union Christian College Merom hold annual graduation in the college chapel this morning. Exercises start at 9:50 a m with Rev Thomas C Smith D D of Denver Colorado delivering The End of the Trail. Alumni association meets this afternoon. The earlier academic commencement was Thursday evening with Prof Morton Lemb Greentown Ind speaking on The Other Wise Man.
Carlistle Carnegie Library bid awards total 86 275 for erection with plans pending adjustments by architect John S Bayard. Bidders Lawhead Brown Willis & Sons and T B Hart submitted options. changes include galvanized iron gutters replacing copper. Commission allocates 10 000 for building and furnishing. 50 to architect. remaining 8 500 to general contract and later heating and plumbing bids.
The corner stone laying for the new Pleasantville high school is postponed to next Saturday afternoon. Carlisle Masonic lodge will lead ceremonies with lodges from across the county and Greene county invited. A parade from Ode Fellows hall will be led by Masonic and Odd Fellows groups with Pleasantville students participating.
Sullivan residents who attended the Republican National Convention in Chicago last week returned home Sunday. Attendees include John Chaney John T. Hays Will Hays Dirrelle Chaney H. Stratton W. P. Stratton Ed Hoover Joe T. Akin Walter F. Wood Edley W. Rogers and W. S. McCoy of Carlisle.
An accident Friday morning on North Section Street involved Voorhees Thompson of Fairbanks driving south, colliding with northbound George F. Botts after passing James Stewart’s rig. Stewart was thrown from his buggy. one wheel broken and harness damaged. Thompson suffered facial scratches from flying glass. Botts and Stewart avoided serious injuries.
The application for Daisy Ladson to be admitted to the Southern Hospital for the Insane in Evansville has been accepted and she will be transported to the institution soon.
Announcement of the coming marriage of Burchard Drummond, formerly of Sullivan, and Miss Clara Nooney of Jacksonville Florida, received in this city. The wedding is planned for the last of the month. Drummond is employed by the Western Union Telegraph Company in Jacksonville.

May figures show Dadney's Boys crew logging strong earnings and county workers surpassing averages. County officers expenses totaled 1438.06 with institutions upkeep at 842.93 and salaries at 457. Revenue assessment bills amount to 1638.50 for June. Free gravel road construction cost 4852.40 in May. Total county bills paid near 17000.
A special car arranged to carry Sullivan lodge of Elks members to the King Day celebration in Terre Haute will depart at 6 o clock tonight. It will also transport local attendees from Jalestine and Robinson. A large turnout is expected for the Collette Park exercises under Judge B P O Hiks. A mammoth parade precedes the meeting with Iki lodges and other organizations. After the ceremonies a mammoth flag will be presented to park commissioners by Terre Haute Lodge No 586.
Wrench McKee brother of Mrs. Martin Pigg was seriously injured Sunday near Jattas Creek in Jasonville after being kicked by a mule. He was taken to the hospital in Linton in serious condition. Mr and Mrs M L Pigg and Mr and Mrs A W Pigg went to Linton after the accident.
The trial of James Korby Howe of Shelburn on a murder charge is scheduled to begin Monday in Clay County Circuit Court at Brazil.
The Terre Haute Star and Sullivan Union will cover the national conventions and the forthcoming presidential campaign. The Star is the morning paper available on publication day and the Sullivan Union provides local campaign and county news. One year subscription offered at 2.50 dollars for both papers.
At the Republican National Convention in Chicago Senator Oscar Bland was invited to speak at a Hamilton Club luncheon honoring Indiana and Illinois Republicans. Bland praised party unity, urged support for Lincoln and McKinley principles, and promoted Indiana’s Charles Warren Fairbanks as a strong nominee.
The Sulli van Chamber of Commerce annual banquet in a Christian church dining room elected William E. Aydelotte as president and Walter G. Scott as vice president. Directors named were B. F. McCoy James A. Whatts Alonzo C. Owens Isaac Maswell Ed Chambers and Frank J. Nicholas. Charles R. McKeand of Indianapolis gave the address along with brief remarks by Chie Jackson creator of Golduh and Roger Bean, now writing for Terre Haute and Indianapolis Stars.
George Eliot the Illinois farmer charged as an accomplice in the theft of E A Ithman’s automobile faces a preliminary hearing in Squire Lester’s court on Saturday July 1. Eliot is reported to be financially well fixed and preparing a vigorous defense.
John Hoke Beasley son of Mr and Mrs John T Beasley and Janet Passmore wed Thursday at the Episcopal church of the Transfiguration in New York in a small ceremony. Mrs Beasley graduated from Organtz school in Philadelphia. Debow Hunter Sparks served as best man. The couple will reside in a bungalow on the family land in Collett Park Terre Haute Star. Beasley is grandson of J F Hoke and Ephriam Beasley of the city.
At last night’s city council meeting B F McCoy of Sullivan, a well known Miller, was elected to the Sullivan school board to fill the term of W P Stratton. The council also voted to re advertise for bids on bonds to cover the old water works debt, about 15 dollars value, with the city holding around 900 dollars on hand.
Chellis Whipps of Haddon township son of James Whipps was arrested Monday on a charge of assault and battery in Squire Scherb s court Carlisle. He bonded one thousand dollars. Preliminary hearing set for June 29 before Squire Scherb.
Constable Herschel Wence raided the old Peter Cramer saloon in Shelburn yesterday morning and secured four quarts of whiskey. No arrests were made as malefactors have operated there with little interference.
Miss NeHe McClellan will serve as hostess for the Covered Dish Club tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Carl Sherrod hosted a birthday party yesterday at Mrs. Andy McClanahan’s home for her daughter Miss Georgia Louise Sherrod who turned eight. About twenty five children attended.
