A short poem by Jos. S. Reed extols the optimistic robin and the virtue of gratitude in adversity. The speaker urges cheerful acceptance of what the day may bring, using the bird’s song as a model for faith and resilience.
The inscription describes items placed in the Sullivan library cornerstone including names of state and local officials, church and school listings, library and club members, Masonic and Eastern Star officers, a Bible, newspapers, a photo of the Woman's Club, a poem by Joe 8 Reed titled A True Optimist, and various personal items and a coin collection. The list names national and Indiana figures, Sullivan County officers, local churches, schools, and organizations.

James L Carty age unknown died last Wednesday at his daughter Alva Hadden's home in the city. Born in Virginia in 1824 he moved to Sullivan in 1868 and served in the Kentucky home guards during the Rebellion. He was married to Rachael Dickerson and was father to Alva Hadden Robert Carty Samuel Carty Thomas Carty and Lucy Wheatley. He belonged to the Baptist church. Funeral held at Alva Hadden's residence with interment at Coffman cemetery.
Commissioner's Court reviews petitions for rock and stone roads in Haddon Turman Hamilton Jefferson Cass Curry townships. Some petitions examined and denied, others found sufficient with roads ordered or opened. Liquor license grants include Cass and Hamilton townships. Viewers appointed for vacation of location and road assessments noted.
Children's Day exercises were held Sunday June 12 at the Presbyterian church. The program featured readings songs and addresses by local children and church members.

Bird Snyder sues William Snyder for divorce. Michael B Shea sues Frank L Stockwell and Illinois Central Railroad garnishee on note and account.
Senator Beveridge has received official notice that he will deliver his first speech in the Republican national convention, seconding the nomination of Roosevelt. Friends view the assignment as a distinct compliment, marking a shift from the usual roll call of states for seconding speeches.
Marshall preacher Rev S D Hill will fill his regular appointment at Corinth Sunday. Readers from here joined in Mt Tabor children's exercises and basket dinner. Whit Moore and wife attended Paxton church. Local youths attended Merom commencement. Many consider visiting the World's Fair in St Louis.
Miss Emma Montgomery visited relatives in Terre Haute last week. A D Torr and Charles McClanahan did business there. Miss Goldie Drake of Sullivan visits Thompson Scott's family. John Littlejohn of Terre Haute is ill at his brother Otto’s home southeast of Farmersburg. Miss Maude Linkenhaker of Sullivan visits friends here. Andy Curry builds a seven room house on Adley Carruthers’ recently purchased property. William J Steward of Farmersburg and Miss Nellie May Hodges of Shelburn wed by Rev S O Dorsey Tuesday night. Clarence Branson goes to Danville for six weeks of study. Misses Iva Ridgeway and Delpha Bennett elected Epworth League Convention delegates to Vincennes June 20–22.
Ollie Handrix and Miss Grace Keene shopped in Sullivan Saturday. Mrs Ona Worth is no better. Mort Pigg of Latta s Creek visited Mr Ward Pigg from Saturday to Sunday. Mrs Sarah C Smith and daughter Madge of Merom visited Mrs Ella Pigg Saturday and Sunday. Geo Usrey and wife of Cass visited W C Usrey and wife Sunday. Grace Keene visited home folks Sunday. Geo Kirk and Everett Rhodes called on Clara and Mary Marshall Sunday. Minnie Story of near Dugger visited her parents Friday. Look for a wedding soon.
Three Sullivan NY equestrian events planned for the Fourth include a trotting race a pacing race and a free for all. Local organizers expect lively attendance and racing action across the day.
Mr and Mrs John H Jackson celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at home in Jefferson township. Married June 15 1854 they have lived in Jefferson township all their lives.
A relic unearthed southwest of Carlisle by Lewis Wallace on W. F. Lisman’s farm is an ancient hatchet three and a half inches long. The tool resembles a broad-ax, with a coppery hard metal, likely hardened copper from long lost craft. Found in a recently cleared field, it is believed to have been lost by Spanish or French explorers two to three centuries ago.
The Lodges Modern Woodmen Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias in Sullivan held joint detonation exercises last Sunday afternoon with Shelburn and Sullivan bands providing music. New Lebanon launches a campaign as deputies with J W Kemp work in camp jurisdiction and Sullivan prepares to send teams to Mercin to initiate candidates. Dugger expected to begin active work soon amid well attended memorial exercises by Sullivan Woodmen and Odd Fellows.
Prof McCullough sent the eighth grade publication More Light to Francis W. Kelsey, professor of Latin at the University of Michigan. In a June 9 1904 letter from Ann Arbor he lauds Sullivan's eighth grade work as remarkable and a great asset to the city. He thanks Mr Arnold Getty whose name appears on the copy.
Regular morning and evening services scheduled for Sunday June 19. The morning sermon will focus on Baptist Missions in Indiana with a general gospel service in the evening. Everyone is invited.

Local clergy and families attend St Marys commencement and weddings are announced.
Miners and operators remain at an impasse over Sullivan field disputes after a Terre Haute House meeting. Officials say the Star City area cannot shift from mine run mining due to market demand, while no progress was made on Star City, Jackson Hill, Hymera, or outside labor at Dickerson. The miners expect little change and the session yielded only minor, non decisive talks.
