Enthusiasm Grows for Wabash River Improvement

Five Indiana men return from a five day trip on the steamer Ne oma down the Wabash to Mt Carmel and Vincennes. They laud the Grand Rapid Locks completed in 1884 and argue for more locks and a dam to boost navigation and lower transport costs for farmers and traders.

Runaway accident proves fatal for Vincent Corbin

Vincent Corbin, a respected Sullivan County farmer born in Haddon township in 1843, died after blood poisoning developed from injuries from a runaway near Paxton. He and A S Tildrich were en route to Sullivan when a frightening rig caused their horse to bolt, Corbin sustaining multiple fractures and neck and face injuries. He died Friday morning a few days after the Tuesday accident. He leaves a widow Catharine A. Sproatt and one son Frank R. Corbin.

Commissioner Asbury Hurt In Quarry Incident

County Commissioner Joe Asbury was severely injured Monday at a stone crusher north of Sullivan near the Bogle mine. He had climbed the machine to observe its work when a sledge hammer in the hopper was flung out on startup and struck his left breast. No bones were broken, but he will be incapacitated for several days.

Rock Island gains Evansville and Terre Haute lines control

The Rock Island system via the St. Louis and San Francisco took control of the Evansville and Terre Haute and its subsidiaries by acquiring the syndicate holdings led by Edwin S. Hooley. L. B. Pearson and B. F. Yoakum announced the ownership change. Yoakum became president in place of Hooley, with no other board changes. The price was reported around fifty.

McCulloch Traction Lines Plan Sullivan County Coal Rail

Geo. F. McCulloch and Union Traction interests formed the Union Traction Coal Company in Indianapolis for 100000 to haul Sullivan County coal to Indianapolis markets. The move aims to connect coal fields to the gas belt via interurban lines, with the Plainfield-Brazil line to be integrated. Miss Carrie Carter of Carlisle is visiting.

Sullivan County forms new bank and trust company

The Sullivan County Loan and Trust Company filed articles of incorporation with the Secretary of State. Capital stock is 1000000 dollars, with 64000 subscribed and 36000 to be before operation by Oct 5 1803. The firm may act as executor administrator guardian trustee registrar and transfer agent and will serve as a general trust company strengthening local commerce.

Public Nuisance on Saturday Streets in Town

Town authorities are urged to clear crowded streets on Saturdays on the east side of the square report jockeys with horses wagons and a few ragged children and dogs. The note warns of diseased looking animals and calls for marshal action to remove the nuisance and restore safe highway use.

Close Call As Horse Bolts Demolishes Buggy At Cemetery Hill

Mr and Mrs Lee Allen and their granddaughter were riding toward Sullivan when the horse bolted after a paper on a hill west of the cemetery. The buggy was wrecked and occupants were thrown to the ground. Mrs Allen and the child suffered serious bruises though no bones were broken. The buggy had been bought just Saturday and was a rubber tire vehicle.

Automatic Haulage Company Incorporation Filed

Automatic Haulage Company filed articles of incorporation for 40000 with Vigo county recorder in Terre Haute on Tuesday. The new firm plans to manufacture traction haulage systems and other mine and quarry machinery. Albert D. Scott and Walter G. Scott serve on the board of directors.
