On July 1 nearly 150000 workmen across mills and factories found themselves unemployed as wage scales expired and non signing proprietors halted operations. Glass workers face annual shutdowns but expect quick reemployment, while about 400 iron and steel mills and 200 glass factories already closed.
In Homestead Pennsylvania July 2 quiet pervades as Amalgamated lodges order removal of effigies from telegraph poles around the mills. Carnegie's works report the most complete shutdown in its history with no workers inside, mechanics and laborers among the locked out.
A Chicago report claimed T. T. Drycinski was dead. he later appeared at the morgue to deny the rumor. The Chicago university seeks 140000 of a 1900000 building fund by July 10. Indictments of Rev. Thomas Dixon Jr. for criminal libel were dismissed.
John Bidwell of California and J B Cranfill of Texas win the Prohibition party tickets for president and vice president at the Omaha convention after a long day of platform battles and multiple ballots. Bidwell led the presidential first ballot with 59 votes, Surpassing Demorest and Stewart, while Cranfill secures the vp nomination on the second ballot amid shifts among Weaver and Gresham supporters.
The People’s party national convention is in Omaha with advance crowds swelling the city. Chairman Taubeneck expects up to 80,000 visiting strangers as interest grows in contested presidential nominations and advancing claims among several candidates.
The Republican state convention at Topeka Kansas met with large attendance and a fiery fight over the governorship. After five ballots A W Smith won the nomination with 3875 votes, Morrill 279, Murdock 51, Barker 10, Wright 5. nomination for lieutenant governor R R Moore also went unanimously.
In Maplesey Wisconsin on July 2 the extra session ended without a legally adopted apportionment bill. Assemblyman Hall charged the senate and assembly passed separate bills, causing a rumpus and a recess. Most attendees left town, leaving too few to form a quorum in either house.
In BoonxsK Ia on July 2 J P Dolliver was nominated for a third term by acclamation at the Republican convention. Opponent Senator Kamvar of Webster City withdrew. Dolliver spoke to the convention. In Warren Ohio also July 2 Stephen A Northway was nominated by the Republican convention on the ninth ballot for the Nineteenth district. Northway replaces Judge E K Taylor who was General Garfield's successor twelve years ago.
The state central committee met in Curiaco on Thursday and adopted a resolution denouncing the sweating system. Campbell was approved as chairman of the national committee and thorough organization was planned.
New York July 2 William C Whitney states he will not accept the chairmanship of the Democratic national committee despite many mentions of his name. He emphasizes he will not take the position under any circumstances.

A thunder and lightning storm with heavy rain and strong winds swept Philadelphia on Thursday causing extensive damage to homes and trees. John Jenkins was killed. workman John Mercer suffered a broken leg. Mrs Ella Sigman and others were injured. unroofed houses and fallen trees disrupted streets.
A cyclone moved over Garretson's Landing twenty miles east of the city on Thursday morning shredding five buildings and a large gin house. Trees were uprooted fences blown down and crops damaged. One man was seriously injured by flying timbers though no fatalities were reported.
In Little Rock on July 2 a Black man named Robert Donley who had harmed an 11 year old Black girl was captured by a mob in Union township Lee county. He was jailed in Haynes awaiting preliminary trial before a mob of 10 Black men abducted him and hanged him from a tree limb in the town’s outskirts. The body remained suspended until daylight.
John Clarkson, once regarded as a premier pitcher, was given an unconditional release by the Boston club on Thursday. His poor performance on the mound and failure to stay in condition led to the decision, signaling the end of his tenure with the team.
