An agent spoke with the adjutant general during a conference with H C Frick in Attorney Knox's office. The general said Frick asked for state help to gain possession of works but that militia was not necessary at Homestead at present and a sheriff intervention would risk more loss of life.

Pittspune July 11 The Homestead committee returned from Harrisburg after meeting Governor Pattison. J F Cox stated Pattison will not use the National Guard as police and would call out the militia only in an emergency. Cox alleged Pinkertons fired first and that no gun was within half a mile of the landing boat.

Reports say non unionists carry revolvers and are instructed to use them if attacked.
San Francisco July 11 report states the West Berkeley powder works exploded Saturday. About 200 workers were present and estimates place deaths at 180 with many injured. Oakland and Alameda residents fled to the streets in panic as damage spread for miles.
A mid 19th century style report states a broken east bound passenger train split in two on Laks Shore road near Dorset Ohio between Younestown and Ashtabula. One man died and several were injured. Henry J Brock of Buffalo narrowly escaped by leaping through a window.
Completion of the million dollar subscription for the University of Chicago was achieved by July 10. Trustee H A Rust pledged 350 000 at noon Saturday during a board meeting in Secretary Goodspeed's office, prompting loud applause from the trustees.
A Valparaiso dispatch reports Charles Riggins, sailor on the Baltimore, killed by rioters, will be exhumed and buried in American soil after a permit for exhumation was issued.
Brooklyn July 11 Professor Charles H Carpenter owner of a local preparatory school was arrested in Bay Shore on arson charges. Authorities say recent fires in the area prompted the arrest as the professor shown erratic conduct and heavy drinking leads some to suspect insanity.
Loxton July 11 The latest returns through Saturday afternoon show 189 Tories 158 Liberals 26 Unionists 4 Parnellites and 23 Nationalists elected a net Liberal gain of 84 seats reflecting a shifting political landscape.
The July 11 report notes strong demand for finished iron and steel products while pig iron weakens. Textile mills and boot and shoe trades are busy with early deliveries. Nine convicts escaped from the Massachusetts State Prison at Charlestown by crawling through a sewer system Friday afternoon. They entered the sewer from the yard, cut through an eight foot iron-bar trap, then traversed pipes to emerge in main sewers and manholes. Nine men named Lynch Coffey Mullen Mc Call Booth O Hearn Bradley O Connor Golding fled. Golding and McCall were recaptured, others at large.
Stocks were almost lifeless with only 57 887 shares changing hands. Prices in most cases advanced fractionally despite an unfavourable bank statement and overall dullness. Louisville and Nashville fell 1 percent as the notable exception.
