Captain Josiah Stanley, a veteran of two wars, died Friday night at his Cass Township home. He served in active duty during both conflicts and was widely respected in the community for his service.
Captain Josiah Stanley a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars died at his Cass township home after a short illness. He served in the 4th Indiana and 97th Indiana and was captured and held at Libby prison. He leaves a large family and was a former Mason and G A R member. Burial at Hickory cemetery.

J. R. Sharp appointed superintendent of the mines for the Consolidated Indiana Coal Company in this county, succeeding H. S. Lingle who has resigned.
Mr and Mrs W L Sloan who stayed with Mr and Mrs Ralph Sloan have returned to their home in Galien Ohio.
Ten foreigners armed with clubs rocks and rails attacked Julia Backshea's hotel at Jackson Hill No 4. Windows shattered and shots fired as two foreign factions clash. Landlady suffered a nervous attack. warrants issued and arrests made. Jackson Hill Coal and Coke Company supports prosecution.
Local businessmen may raise funds to cover costs for Sullivan high school orchestra to travel in a special car to Indianapolis for a State Teachers Association session March 28 to 30. The music committee proposed a paid appearance, and Prof. Sloane along with the ensemble hope to perform if funded.
A thimble club formed Friday evening at Mrs. Aurel Good Win's home with Mrs. Josie Welsh elected president and nine members named including Mrs. Edith Chowning and Mrs. Mary Bradbury. The next meeting is set for the first Tuesday in March at Mrs. Chowning's home. Refreshments of cocoa and graham crackers were served.
Charles R. Railsback will replace Arthur E. DeBaun as county clerk and is training in the duties. Dave Giles will be his deputy, and Gladys Hiatt daughter of county assessor Frank Thatt will also serve as a deputy. Win Bicknell will succeed Ben C. Crowder as county auditor on March 20 with no deputy appointments announced.

Ira W. Allen longtime educator and ex head of Allen Academy Merom Indiana died at age 84 at his Chicago home 5718 Madison Ave He founded Union Christian college Merom and earlier led Lake Forest Academy Survived by wife and three sons Funeral services held at his residence in the afternoon Also notes a separate Shelburn robbery at Russell Brothers Grocery cash about 500 taken from a store front in Shelburn February 20.
The county commissioners heard the case against Ollie McCracklin of Shelburn to revoke his saloon license. They suspended the license for thirty days starting that date. Prosecutor Bays ordered closure for the period. McCracklin was represented by J W Lindley, with the state represented by Bays. The petition alleged he operated a wine room and allowed women of ill repute at the establishment.
W A Lewis and J H Swisher of the state board of accounts examine the records of A J Curry former recorder for 1910 and 1911 and also review County Recorder Moore’s first year in office.
William Alumbaugh released on bond Friday after arrest on a charge of assault against Mrs. Hal Bogard near Merom Station. He filed a suit for surety of peace in Kirkham's court against Bogard, who was arrested early Saturday by Constable Linkenholker.
Rathal Mahan was convicted of assault and battery on his wife by a Carlisle jury. He was fined $25 with costs totaling about $61. Mahan resides at Wilfred and the indictment originated in Squire Calvert's court.
Louis J. Kixmiller was elected cashier of the Peoples State Bank of Carlisle to replace Ed gar W. Akin who resigned. Akin left for Davenport Iowa to become general manager of a shoe store chain.
Fairbanks defeated Prairie Creek 20 to 30 in Pound's hall Friday night in a fast well played game. The Fairbanks Club will host Graysville high school Wednesday night February 21, and Farmersburg will face locals Friday night February 23.
Jerusalem Chapter No 81 R A M will have Royal Arch work tomorrow evening Sullivan Commandery No 54 Knights Templar will perform Red Cross degree Friday evening in the same locality establishing a sequence of ritual duties by two local Masonic bodies on consecutive nights.
Nellie May Rowe born September 8 1885 in Rockville Indiana cared for young siblings after mother’s death. She married Gerthal French December 17 1908, had daughter Gladys Winslow July 10 1910, moved to Riverside California for health and died February 8 1912 at age 26. Survived by husband daughter father L H Rowe one brother J F Rowe four sisters. Funeral held in Paxton Methodist Church with Rev P C Lisman, interment Center Ridge cemetery.
Dr. A H Purdue once Sullivan High School principal was elected state geologist of Tennessee. A native of Warrick County and a graduate of Terre Haute Normal, he studied at Chicago and Stanford and worked with Dr John C Banner on Arkansas surveys. He taught geology at the University of Arkansas before his Tennessee appointment.

Frank Dale led Fred Heaton 113 to 74 in a 200 to 177 Dale lead after two blocks. The final block of 100 will be played this evening with Dale needing 100 and Heaton 123 to reach final totals.
James FR. Brown was summoned to Mt Carmel Illinois on Friday due to the death of his stepfather Van Wright aged 75.
Charles H. Roberts, a Civil War veteran and former superintendent of Evansville water works, died Sunday morning in Evansville Hospital after mastoiditis surgery. He left Sullivan long ago and is survived by three daughters, two brothers, and two sisters. Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in Evansville with burial at Oak Hill cemetery.
The Brookdale Farm was performed at Pogue's Hall on Saturday night by local talent to a full house. Ernestine Wernz sang two solos while vaudeville bits entertained between acts. Irvin Wright and a music troupe backed by Warren Dickerson and Aesha Bicknell kept the audience engaged as Cyrus Monroe and Frank Patton drew special praise. Door receipts totaled $68.55.
A four week revival at Ebenezer church of the Farmersburg M E charge closed with 100 professed conversions and 81 additions to the church led by pastor S J Shake. Local ministers Perry McClanahan W J Williams and George Fof assisted, with 33 of the new members being heads of families.
Miss Carrie Yeager reports the two week period ending February 19 as cooperative weather observer for the county. William Coppage of Turman township visited the city Saturday to make a business call at the Union.

Roy Herschfield of Shelburn filed quo warranto proceedings in the circuit court to oust Alaska Carter from Shelburn town clerk. He says he was elected as a socialist in November and alleges bond disputes and board votes favored Carter. Hunt Gambill represents Carter. Herschfield seeks the office and two thousand dollars.
Indiana Railroad Commission grants an additional six months for interurban block signal installations. Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern contracts for 15 miles using General Railway Signal Company lights, visible in all weather up to 1500 feet, at about 1000 dollars per mile.

Martha Durham returned to her school in Oxford Ohio on Saturday. Ethel Monk of Graysville visited Minnie Watson on Thursday. uy Cushman and family visited Ross Turman on Saturday. George Fritser from near Middletown visited Warren Watson Thursday night. Chaster Street and family moved from Centralia Illinois last week and will live with Mrs Burk. Rh C Osburn and family spent Friday in Merom. Mrs Mary Medsker plans to move back to her farm soon. Will Watson sent four Langshaw chickens to South Pasadena California last week. Florence Graystone returned Thursday from a two week visit in Terre Haute and other points.
W L Ford purchased the Adam Maschino farm located about 2 13 miles southeast of the city. The farm covers 89 acres and was sold by Mrs Adam Maschino and Mrs C C Williams of Jasonville for 11250 per acre. Ford will reside on the property.
James Mills of Curryville, age 18, was struck by a car at Morrison Creek trestle and killed. The incident occurred near the mining area, with authorities identifying Mills as the victim and investigating the traction car involvement.
James Mills age 87 native of England and Curry township pioneer miner was killed when a Sullivan interurban car struck him on a trestle between Shelburn and Sullivan. He left his home during the night and lay down to sleep on the tracks. the first car south passed over him. He leaves an adopted son Thomas Mills.
Bessie Pearl daughter of Newton W and Ruth Haines of Crawford Ill was born Nov 29 1897 and died Feb 11 1912 after nearly five months of illness She joined the Christian church at Big Springs in 1910 She leaves her parents one brother two sisters and many relatives The funeral was held at Big Springs church conducted by Rev Will Yager with a large crowd The class from the consolidated school attended and the remains were buried in Mann cemetery to await the call from on high
Shade Dickerson a miner at the old Shelburn mine was severely injured Friday afternoon when a rock fall buried him. He was dug out and found to have four broken ribs and a knee injury.
The February term of the circuit court convened Monday with Judge Bridwell in charge. Early week focuses on preliminary work for the term. Ward Griffith is appointed bailiff for the term.
James Osburn of Fairbanks township traveled home Tuesday from Fort Morgan Colorado where he had been for weeks settling the business of his late son John Osburn who died there recently.
Robert A. Scott of Linton, district deputy of the Elks, was here Monday evening and visited the Sullivan lodge. Mrs. John Ludington of Frankfort and Mrs. Mary Holmes of Paris, Texas, who had been visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Harbaugh, have returned home.
Mrs. H. R. Ford visited her mother Mrs. Schu at Clinton for several days last week.
Mrs Myrtle DeTroy of Evansville visited Mr and Mrs Burrell Dubre for several days last week.
John T. Hays entertained the executive committee of the Brotherhood of Churches at his residence for a 6 o'clock Thursday dinner. Afterward, important steps were taken for a series of church services to be held during 1912 at various city churches.
Mrs. Josephine Briggs departed Tuesday for New Smyrna Florida to spend the rest of the winter with her sister Mrs Helen Mahley.
