Indiana Judge Rules Saloon Business Has No Legal Existence
Judge Samuel R. Artman of the Boone county circuit court ruled that the saloon license is invalid, stating the state cannot grant a license to sell intoxicants. He asserted the liquor trade has no inherent legal existence and endangers welfare, barring license issuance despite statutes. The decision, known as the Tenth Ward Case, drew cheers from temperance leaders and remonstrants alike.
