In Farmersburg Mrs. John Hammack survived ptomaine poisoning after eating canned beans. Dr. Pearl Bennett treated her and she recovered fully. A local petition urged Representative Springer to back the $1000 saloon license bill. Marshal Charles Shepherd possesses a relic revolver using pin fire cartridges, a long-ago weapon, plus a double-barrel shotgun also firing pinfire rounds.

Joint Session Planned by Sullivan and Vigo County Boards

Sullivan and Vigo County boards of commissioners to meet in Terre Haute tomorrow to authorize the construction of a bridge over Prairie Creek on the county line. A joint resolution is required for building a bridge on a county line road.

Jewell Served as Post Master Under Cleveland

W R Jewell of Danville Illinois once served as Danville postmaster for twenty years and continued to act under Democratic appointees after Cleveland's presidency. High death rate reported in Sullivan County December

State Board of Health figures for December show Sullivan County with 42 deaths and an 18.7 per 1000 rate, the highest in the southern counties. The tally includes stillbirths, infant deaths, age group losses, and causes such as consumption, typhoid, diphtheria, pneumonia, meningitis, and violence. Elwood C. Simmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Simmons, died in Jacksonville, Florida, from health-related complications after a prior run-in accident. his remains were brought home for burial.

In Terre Haute on February 11 Pifer 21 and Deitz 18 from Palestine Illinois were fined five dollars plus costs for an assault on an electric car on the Terre Haute and Sullivan line. Burns of Brazil was detained but released after officers and witnesses cleared him of involvement.

Interurban line may pass through Jefferson Township

A proposed Vincennes Indianapolis and Evansville electric line may traverse Pleasantville and several townships. Public votes on subsidies are planned in Van Buren and nearby townships with two percent taxes. the line would connect Princeton Evansville and Bloomfield Linton Vincennes in a 189 mile route financed to link existing Union Traction assets.

Lincoln’s birthday program and local business moves

Sheriff Walters traveled to Michigan City with Elijah Howlett of Curry township who was sentenced to the penitentiary last week by Judge Henderson. Sullivan high school observed Lincoln’s birthday with exercises, Will Hays delivering an eloquent address. Alex Hiatt, long-time livery operator on North Main, has leased the Hoke warehouse on South Main to open a barn there.

Springer Votes For Blind Tiger Bill Advances To Engrossment

The state senate passed the blind tiger bill to engrossment in the house on Saturday by a 55 to 37 vote. Captain T B Springer, representative from this county, voted aye, a move expected to be welcomed locally for reducing liquor joints. Ed Stitt and family and Mr and Mrs Virgil Booker moved here from Linton.

Former Merom Student Returns to Japan as Missionary

Mrs. Kitamura, a former Union Christian College Me rom student and Defiance College graduate, sails on February 5 for Tokyo to begin missionary work in her homeland. In Olympia she spoke of Japanese school life and culture, praising America and President Roosevelt, and noting Japan’s pride in their traditions and war songs.

James Lewis Shot in Mildred Mine Fight

Shelburn Feb 12 The birth affray at the Mildred mine south east of here Sunday night left James Lewis bartender at the Muskrat saloon with a bullet wound in the right leg. The bullet severed an artery and he nearly died before Dr. Douglass could reach him. The shooter named Dugger is alleged but witnesses are quiet. Will Dunn a 16 year old trapper at Mildred mine was run over by a coal car causing multiple injuries and was taken to the Terre Haute hospital.

Pioneer merchant Thomas Burton dies after long illness

Thomas Burton a leading county resident and pioneer merchant died at his Sullivan home Tuesday after about six months of illness. Born near Graysville, he operated stores in Graysville and Sullivan, later forming a hardware firm and then running general merchandise with his sons Edward and William. He later retired after a fire destroyed their store and opera house. Burton was a Methodist preacher, Mason, auctioneer for decades, and leaves a wife six children and a brother. funeral Thursday at two o’clock at his residence under Masons auspices.

Error in Trustee Report for Hamilton Township

A typographical mistake in Hamilton township trustee's annual report in the Union and Democrat mislabels items under receipts. Only the first 21 items belonged there. remaining items should be listed as expenditures. Receipts include Township fund 3834.66, special school fund 3736.22, road fund 19.22, additional road fund 48.04. Expenditures begin with Benjamin Hummel posting notices 31.50 and continue to the summary.
