Sentenced to hang for first degree murder in Terre Haute
Matthew Alexander a colored man was found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to be hung. He killed Thomas Burke a street car motorman in his home, attacked Mrs Burke, fled to a barn and was captured by a boy. A mob threatened lynching but the sheriff hid the prisoner and moved him to Indianapolis before return to Terre Haute for trial. The widow Burke testified the principal witness. defense claimed nonpremeditated self defense. The jury deliberated under 45 minutes.

Dr. B. F. Buff brother of Judge Geo W. Buff died at his home in Palestine last Friday evening. He was 61, served in Co D 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery during the Civil War, and was a member of the I C O F and G A R. Funeral and burial were at Merom, where he formerly resided.
