A new driver dies on his first day’s work in the Hocking wine business. Authorities investigate the accident and identify the victim, noting the perilous conditions of early employment by the company.
Thos Beasley a new driver at the Bald ridge mine was killed when he fell from the tail chain and was run over by two loaded cars. The 24 year old, sole support of a widowed mother, died instantly around 11 o clock Monday morning at the Baldridge mine where he lived at the St. Clair mine.
Indianapolis December 21 The question of who will lead the Republican state committee becomes sharper as lawmakers gather in Indianapolis. John R Bonnell Crawfordsville revenue collector appears as a new candidate alongside Winfield T Durbin Charles F Remy George Cromer and Fred A Sims. Bonnell is noted as a close Beveridge ally with key appointments attributed to Beveridge and Hemenway agreements.
The jury commissioners Rob ert Taylor and Stewart Barnes with County Clerk DeBaun spent Monday selecting 270 names for the grand and petit juries for 1909 from the tax duplicates. The January circuit term opens January 4, and special venires will be drawn for major cases.
Farmersburg will hold a public installation and dinner on January 2 at 10 a.m. Judge George W. Burt of Sullivan will conduct the ceremonies. Sullivan post and W R C have been invited, along with all old soldiers and their wives in the area.
William P. Fox and Fannie McClaflin of Palestine Illinois wed yesterday with Rev. O L Markman officiating. About 30 relatives attended. The bride is daughter of H R McClaflin, groom a prominent local figure. Both are well known in Palestine and nearby Oaktown.

Carlisle December 22 A surprise dinner was held Tuesday at W A Phillippe near Bellevue coal mine to mark his fiftieth birthday. About 60 relatives and neighbors attended including Pleasant Minich Ridgeway Mayfield Lemon McCormick Purcell Riley Starbor Inmans Campbell Mc Carter Wortman Wilson Loomis Humphrey and many others. Attendees enjoyed an elaborate meal and best wishes for future birthdays.
Shelburne December 22 The four year old son of Mr and Mrs Jack Carney of Willfred died Saturday from cerebral apoplexy The funeral was held Sunday conducted by Rev Father Bolin.
Farmersburg December 22 Edgar McKinney was elected W M Ancil Parrish J W Roy Heap secretary and Edgar A O Dell S W at a Friday night meeting of the Farmersburg Masons.
D W Norris of Fort Dodge Iowa arrived in Carlisle Indiana to visit his sister Mrs Charles Bremlinger for a few days He has not seen her in sixteen years He will travel to Illinois before returning home.
Thieves broke a basement window at J. B. Mullane & Company Monday night and climbed to the main floor. Five revolvers were stolen from a case, a Colt’s automatic left behind, with investigators noting no other items taken.
Henry E. Agar told how he vanished from the Lafayette and fell into the Wabash River. He described drifting to a houseboat, then moving to Old Mexico to start anew, forming a bank and land interests before his arrest. Reports say he served as private secretary to Colonel Heywood and sought settlement of charges.

Washington officials state that prohibition victories had little impact on last year’s internal revenue receipts. They attribute declines mainly to the fall 1906 financial disturbance and the branding and labeling law, whose ambiguity and first year operation reduced spirits tax collections in Kentucky Indiana and Ohio. The fiscal year ending July showed July to September shortfalls improving by November.

Mr. and Mrs. David Crawley of this city mark their 56th wedding anniversary. Married in Fairbanks in 1852, he was born in York, Kl 78 years ago and learned cabinet making at ten. They moved to Sullivan in the 1860s, entered furniture and undertaking, and he served as county treasurer, auditor, and town clerk for many years. The couple remains in good health.
The will of the late Thirza Wood was filed for probate yesterday afternoon at the county clerk’s office. Under the provisions of the will all of her property goes to her brother, William K. Pierce, and no administrator was appointed.
Shelburn reports a December 22 talent show titled A Southern Romance to be staged at Red Men's hall Monday night under Otto Hill of the Hill Stock company. January plans include further local talent shows by Red Men and Wastern Star chapter.

A Modern Woodmen lodge was organized in Shelburn on Wednesday night with 15 charter members. Officers elected include Frank First as consul and W L Laurent as banker. The charter work was led by District Deputy M J Forman of Terre Haute.
The former mining town of Midland with over five hundred residents is rapidly deserted due to ground subsidence from undermined mines. Gas ignition and burning braces have caused the ground to sink, leaving the town near the Sullivan county line abandoned.
George Hunt has moved onto property southwest of town and announces the Star Fertilizer plant destroyed by fire will likely be rebuilt. The previous odor from the old plant caused local complaints, and the new facility is expected to be built with sanitary considerations.

The January term docket for Sullivan circuit court will be busy with many trials. Reuben Wheat faces murder charges in the George White case in Jackson township. The Shepherd Hinkle arson case will be heard, along with temperance case from Shelburn involving Curt McCoskey and John Myers. Multiple blind tiger cases are slated for trial.
John Wilson of Shelburn, charged with the murder of Leonard Orr, was released on bond Saturday after being jailed. The death followed an altercation over a well in Orr’s yard in which Wilson allegedly struck Orr with a shovel. The grand jury won’t convene until March term, delaying investigation.
Ger that French and Miss Nelle Rowe were united in marriage at the Methodist church with Rev Mr De Long officiating. The bridegroom's brother Fred French of Sullivan and Mrs FP A Geham of Terre Haute and Edward Davis were in the bridal party. A luncheon followed at the Davis home. The couple planned a wedding trip visiting Indianapolis then eastern points, and will establish their home in Terre Haute after January 1.
Edgar Wilkis, a well known liveryman, who disappeared days ago, returned Monday from Kansas City Missouri where he had spent most of the time.
James Sims, a Superior mine driver east of Dugger, was arrested Saturday for punching out both eyes of a mule with a sprag. Special Officer Browning of Vandalia Coal Co. charged him. Browning pleaded guilty, and the justice fined Sims $25 plus costs, deemed small for the inhuman act.

Fred Orr of Carlisle was fined one dollar and costs by Squire Kirkham on assault and battery charges against John Wilson of Shelburn. Wilson, accused of murdering Len Orr, reportedly went to Shelburn after learning of the assault and beat Wilson.
Congressman John C Chaney introduces an amendment to the McCumber bill to raise pensions for veterans. At ages 62 12 dollars monthly rising to 75 30 dollars with staged increases at 65 68 and 70.
Carlisle Indiana December 22 Ches ter Taylor a young man near Busseron was accidentally struck in the face with an axe. The blow cut a gash from eye to upper lip and required three stitches. The wound is very painful and the incident is reported locally.
A blaze started in Barney Davy's room in the Woodsmall block on Saturday night in Shelburn. A four bucket brigade formed and extinguished the fire after it burned a large hole in the floor. The stove caused the blaze.
Sheriff-elect Wible selects Ed J. Kelly of Hymera as deputy during the term. Kelly, a coal miner, serves as Hymera town clerk and treasurer and will live at the sheriff's residence.
Carlisle Ind December 22 The Presbyterian church of this place will be dedicated Sunday after extensive repairing. The service will be led by the ladies of the choir and Rev Il Irving pastor.
The Hadden township teachers met in the Carlisle school building Saturday for their monthly institute. Topics were well discussed by the township’s teachers.
