Pick Ups Around Town and a Dr Newman Fraud Recall
A street faker swindled Sullivan residents with promises of free goods. The piece recalls Dr Newman’s eight year old city visit when he staged nightly shows at the old South Side Opera House and sold a faulty medicine, offering a $5 gift on closing night. He charged 10 cents admission, 20 cents for reserved seats, and 25 cents per bottle, earning a profit on each bottle. On the final night he gave away a self portrait costing five dollars.
