Professor Frank Aydelotte of this city has earned a Bachelor of Letters from Oxford University after a year and a half abroad. Rhodes scholar during his first year, he will return home to take the English chair at Indiana State University after Christmas. He met Miss Marie Osgood in Oxford and plans to wed. the couple’s wedding delayed by his Rhodes status. The Oxford examiners announced his dissertation topic and public examination date. Prof and Mrs. Aydelotte left for New York on December 12 aboard the Baltic and will visit New York and Boston before Sullivan return.

Couple Found at Chop House Brought to Jail
Officers raided a south side chop house owned by Oscar Rich at dawn and found Gorby Howe and Nora Shields asleep in a room. They pleaded guilty to adultery and fornication, each fined 15 dollars and jailed. Shields has a prior intoxication record. Rich faces trial for keeping a house of ill fame.

Death of Conductor Jake Beem at Fourth Station
Pleasantville Indiana reports the death of Jake Beem of Herrington Kansas a Pennsylvania Lines conductor who died of heart failure shortly after breakfast on his train. Engineer's survey finds Troll street fall exceeds two feet

In Farmersburg on December 17 the local bank showcased an antique coin collection in its window. Highlights include a 1797 US dollar valued at 25, a 287 AD Roman coin, a rare 20 cent piece, 1828 half dollar, 1794 English penny, 1813 Norwegian shilling, 1793 US penny, a 411 AD Roman coin, an 1854 three dollar gold piece, and gold dollars from 1849 1851 and 1856. Also displayed is a land grant signed by President Martin Van Buren dating March 20 1837 conveying land near Pimento to Valentine Sparks, now owned by Lew Weeks.

David S Whittaker a Greene county figure living in Los Angeles died there and was said to have helped delay the Bloomfield county seat move by planning a fishing trip with Judge Buff to Florida. Bloomfield locals led by Emmerson Short pursued a court house battle while Worthington sought to stop it. Buff returned unaware of the ruse and the plan kept the new court house on track. The town board abolished the office of street commissioner at a special meeting held Saturday night effective January first. Peter Scott had held the post for years. The office operated month to month and the board aims to economize the winter by placing work with the streets committee chaired by William Bolinger. Causes of Slump in Sullivan County Corn Crop
The Sullivan County corn crop in 1907 fell far short of normal due to wet springs and underutilized land. 53,118 acres yielded an average of 21.42 bushels per acre, far below the state’s best counties and far from the potential 40 to 70 bushels. About 20,000 acres of prime land were left unplanted or out of production, production dropped to 1.2 million bushels versus an expected 3 million, and farm labor shifts to mining reduced manpower.
