Private Harris moves from the 128th Field Artillery to the 35th Military Police Company and is separated from comrades. Ora Hatfield a soldier from Camp Shelby Miss is jailed in Danville Ill after allegedly impersonating a federal officer and extorting $100 from Shelburn miner James Butler. Hatfield 27 formerly lived at Dugger and had no furlough papers. Authorities at Camp Shelby were notified.
Rolland Brown son of J R Brown of this city serves in the Navy and is attached to U S S George Washington. He has crossed the Atlantic several times as a convoy for U S troops and reports the crew busy preparing the ship for President Wilson's Europe voyage.
Judge W H Bridwell grants Harold Dillingham of Hamilton township annulment of his marriage contract with Xenia Whitlock Dillingham. The case arose after Harold sought nullification claiming paternity of a child, while Xenia denied paternity. evidence showed Harold not the father.
Gus Neeriemier, 35, of Hymera, showed violent insanity after his wife’s death thirty days ago. Sheriff Hale and three deputies wrestled him in Hymera, then he bit a deputy’s coat and tore a strap. In jail he tore a leather strap, ripped shackles, and stripped clothing while raving. He was moved to Evansville for admission to the southern insane hospital after Monday transport by deputies Douthitt and Brodie.
Clarence G Grokaw died at his home three miles west of the city from influenza. The funeral was held Friday morning at the residence in compliance with health rules, conducted by Rev Hayden H Allen, an uncle of the deceased, with Elks Lodge burial rites at Center Ridge cemetery. Pallbearers were Elks lodge members Dave Rogers Charles Lorenzен Don Mayfield E D Davis Oscar Eaton.
A smooth swindler victimized several Sullivan merchants with bogus checks last week. He passed a check on Stark & Company for 21.50 and bought $3 worth of goods, then used similar signatures on other names including A. Beasley and Willam Byers for farm work, all under the alias W. BE. Anderson.

Golden Dodd of this city died Sunday morning at St. Anthony’s hospital in Terre Haute from influenza after a brief illness. He had been treated there for eye problems for months. Survived by widow formerly Miss Ouria Hiatt, daughter Helen six years, son John six weeks, his parents Mr. and Mrs. James Dodd, two sisters Mrs. Grace Starkey and Mrs. Blanche Hayden, and a brother Ira Register.
Ward Hawking, longtime chairman of the local exemption board, resigns. Major Balzell names John J. Gravemier to succeed him. Board reorganized with James J. Durham as president, Gravemier as secretary, and Dr. C F Briggs as other member. Mrs. Herbert Steele remains chief clerk.
Mr and Mrs Murray Crawley of Chicago visited Mr and Mrs John Thompson in town on Sunday. The occasion highlighted social ties between Chicago residents and local families during a weekend gathering.
Thomas Criss aged 20 and Ezra Criss aged 17, sons of Ellsworth Criss and Jacob N Criss of Jackson township, were arraigned in the Federal Court at Indianapolis before Judge Anderson. Thomas Criss received a three year sentence to the Atlanta Federal Prison. Hard Criss was allowed to return home with his father, who was in court, and the court ordered school attendance with a report in Indianapolis next May.
Frank Laughery of Graysville received a telegram stating his son Pearl C Laughery was killed in action on October 15 at age 30. He served in Company B 302 Ammunition Train. Also listed is William Fritzlerlan of Carlisle who died of wounds.
The Mutual Truck Company annuls a contract with a Milwaukee firm for 85000 dollars of motors to equip 250 trucks. Deliveries expected to begin in January, with material secured for building the entire fleet.
The Commissioners Court grants Wanell Coal Company permission to cross the Sullivan and Jasonville highway in Jackson township with a dinkey tramway railway. Deivid Thermson is appointed justice of the peace in Gill township.
Rev W S Alexander of Jireh Wyoming, a 1911 Union Christian College graduate, donated 193 acres in Turman township to Merom Ind based college. The land, valued at about five thousand dollars, includes a five hundred dollar pledge for the Hatten Memorial building and the remainder added to the college endowment.
Five days after being gassed by the Huns, Private Roy R. Hammond of Hymera was wounded, per a war department telegram to his sister Mamie Stewart. Hammond had rejoined his company within a week after gassing, served after leaving Anderson, Ind., Camp Taylor, Shelby, Hancock, and Merritt, and sailed for France in March. He has a mother, two sisters in Hymera, and a brother at Fort Oglethorpe Ga.

Mrs. Payard T. Lang announced that her brother, serving with a heavy artillery company at the front, was wounded on September 16. He is now in a hospital and recovering well.
