Private Harris recounts harrowing seven day combat with German forces, describing harsh conditions, fear, and alleged treachery amid the fighting. He details nighttime bombardments, shortages of supplies, and personal peril as Allied units pressed forward.
The letter recounts brutal shelling and hazardous dug-in fighting as artillery crews and Doughboys struggle to hold lines. It follows a driver team sprint to the guns under fire, a major ordering halt, and a savage clash with German artillery and infantry. It also profiles Private Cecil Nesbit who lost a leg in France and hopes to return by Christmas with an artificial limb.
Clarence G. Brokaw known as Jack Brokaw dies at 34 from pneumonia at his home four miles west of the city. Survived by widow Grace McClure, daughter Jeanette, aged eight, father William A. Brokaw, sister Mrs. Wessie Eaton Jr., brothers Allen of Denver and Denney in service overseas. Funeral arrangements not set.
Stores and mercantile establishments in the city stay open until 6 P M under the health order. The influenza epidemic does not force closures of business houses. The health order continues to ban theatres public meetings pool rooms while others remain permitted.
Thomas Jones and son Roy of Shelburn were arraigned before Mayor Smith after being arrested for possessing liquor illegally. Jones Sr. received a $249 fine and 30 days at the penal farm, Roy was fined $134.50 and given 30 days. Both pleaded guilty.
Fred Martin formerly of Harry's shoe store writes from France that Irving M. Eastman Roy Metcalf Toots Williams Slim Watts and all of Company B 309th Ammunition Train arrived in Bordeaux on November 10 with a great reception.
Union Christian College at Merom plans a new brick gym named in honor of Prof. Elizabeth Hatten for twenty thousand dollars. The first gift comes from Prof. Hatten, long time Greek and German professor. Dedication slated for late May during the state Christian churches conference. Also notes a Court case: Crawford Fairbanks et al face trial in Sullivan circuit court on corrupt practices act related to Curry township local option election in 1915.
The Cadwell concert at the Methodist church Monday featuring Ida Gardner and Harold Lyman is postponed due to influenza. R. W. Cadwell will try to reschedule with the artists, and holders of admission cards should keep them. Extra tickets are available at the Cadwell store at no cost.
Former Sullivan resident Harry Kirkham died at Weed California on the 16th from Cutting his throat while delirious in the Red Cross hospital He had been ill with influenza His remains arrived for burial Sunday night with funeral Monday at Mrs Mary Kirkham’s home conducted by Rev W E Gray and interment at Center Ridge cemetery.
Jerome Parker 18 son of Dr. John J. Parker of Merom died Sunday at Rensselaer Indiana from influenza that progressed to pneumonia. He attended St Josephs Academy at Rensselaer and fell ill days earlier. Survived by parents, a brother Gregory, and sister Alice Parker. he was well regarded in Merom.
J I Holcomb of Indianapolis, formerly of Sullivan, writes a Thanksgiving reflection in 1918 praising Americas war effort and humanitarian motives. He urges gratitude for peace, national institutions, and unconditional surrender by enemies, hoping future generations honor the meaning of Thanksgiving.
James R. Riggs reports William Norris of Shelburn died October 4 from battle wounds. The 28 year old son of the late Whit Norris, he left a wife and infant at Shelburn. A Co D 154th Infantry veteran, he enlisted May 27, trained at Camp Taylor, arrived overseas in September. He worked on Riggs farm and at the Shelburn tile plant before service.
George Usrey aged 32 died Friday at his South Main Street home. Funeral was Sunday at the residence, with burial at Antioch. He had moved from Cass two months ago and belonged to the Church of Christ at Cass and to the Odd Fellows and Red Men lodges there. Survived by a widow, two children, his mother Mrs. Lucinda Asrey of Cass, four brothers and one sister.
Hinkle C. Hays Exalted Ruler of the lodge announces the annual Memorial exercises set for next Sunday afternoon are postponed due to the influenza epidemic. Michigan Foley was to deliver the address. A later date is possible.
Wesley Hollingsworth died yesterday morning at his mother's home northwest of the city after several days with pneumonia that followed influenza. He was a road superintendent in district No. 8.
Clay Jewell and family of Fairbanks township traveled to Florida in November and are now in Avon Park. Jewell reports a pleasant visit with C. L. Davis and family at New Smyrna during the trip.
The November term of the circuit court convened Monday morning. The petit jury is ordered to report December 3rd, with possible postponement by Judge Bridwell if flu conditions worsen.
Mrs. Harry McClanahan of Evansville is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A T McClanahan for a social visit.
The Southeastern railroad freight and passenger stations in the city were closed by order of the Director General of railroads. A. L. O Neal, with the company eleven years, nine as agent, will move Sunday to Coalmont to act as Southeastern agent there. Freight moves to C E I lines. passengers will be collected by conductors on trains. Office and equipment are being shipped to other stations. The two depots are among the citys most substantial railroad properties.
The influenza situation across Hymera Sullivan and Shelburn shows improvement with fewer new cases. Capt Claude Asbury, formerly at Fort Riley Kansas and physician in Hymera, returned Saturday to aid in the response as Shelburn reports progress and about 200 cases in May mera area.
Mrs C R Foutch and her daughter Edna are reported ill with influenza in a brief community health update. The note records concern for the family and does not provide further medical details.

The writer details adventures avoiding orders, dodging discipline, and plans to observe artillery fire with a colonel.
